BMW PE exhaust

Can anyone tell me why the BMW PE exhaust sticks out longer than OEM standard exhaust?

Most that have installed the PE say it doesn't bother them but do mention the extra length so it must evoke some sort of visual perception. Some even go so far as to suggest a solution, (I assume cutting it), is an easy fix.

For those that have installed the PE, would you have liked it to be shorter? For my tastes it looks rather aftermarket from the pic's I've seen but on the other hand it sounds great!

I thought the E92's tailpipe is longer? Either way, yes it does extend for about 1/2" more than stock, and the thin polished tips look less than ideal compared to the stock tips. I still like it though, and doesn't bother me so much that I need to replace them with something else. It really is personal choice in this situation. I'm comfortable with BMW's selection, and the sound is what I hold priority.

Yes they are all longer than standard and yes the industrial looking tips are less eye pleasing than the stock chrome tips. I wonder if it has to do with the exhaust note? They do sound very nice indeed!

The BMW PE def needs DiMisa tips before installation. And I wouldn't like the tips sticking out at all. I've never understood why BMW chose these tips for their PE. Pretty ugly for how much $ it cost.

My PE exhaust doesn't stick out at all. I think it is all up to the technician that installed it. I don't mind the PE tips either. I have black DiMisa tips in the trunk but may never put them on my car.

Depends on how the tech install it.
My tech installed my exhaust too short, I want mine stick out a little bit more.

Makes sense where you cut the existing pipes dictates overall length but even so most install photos I've seen run on the long side. So bringing this to the attention of the tech seems like a good way to tailor the situation to one's liking. - good suggestion!

As for tips, if they are cut to standard lengths I wouldn't bother either, it's only when they are eye sores I agree and would add a cosmetic cover.

Good posts guys, thanks! I really wanted to go w/ the PE but just couldn't get past the ugly overhang. Now it all seems doable to satisfaction.

It has a beautiful note from what I've heard via YouTube. I was thinking of having it done to mine, that or the PPK (big warranty guy here, and no tracking.) I don't think the tips would bother me.

If you don't mind me asking where are you getting your PE from? It's roughly 1400 on bmws site and my local dealer has been willing to price match on items recently so I was hoping to find a deal I could present. Def post pics of install and sound note!

For an e92 Tischer BMW has them for $1200(even cheaper for an e90) not including shipping. Info can be found on the website, www.getbmwparts.com

My PE actually stuck out less or very close to stock

Might be how installed

To answer some questions:

The tips are part of the exhaust sound. My dips#th engineer (non bwm) that did the installation shortend the tips, created more metal noise...
The e90 and e92 do differ in length
There is quite some flexibility to adjust the hang up. Eventuely taking of a piece of the pipe in the middle of the exhaust can help to get a better fit.

My e90 PE protrudes further than my e92 PE, so far that 2 kids have burned themselves slightly on it while grabbing hockey bags from the trunk

It also catches more dirt and debris, which can be difficult to remove from the chrome finish.

Anyway, side from adjusting the tone, I always assumed the extra length was to accommodate the different rear bumper design for mtech - but never verified that. Without rotating and stretching the rubber hanger pieces, I don't see how there's much play in the way you install it.

Isn't the PE an axle back? If you want it to sit more flush with the bumper, just cut the factory pipes off more.

My PE fits exactly the same as the factory E92 exhaust. As others have stated, it all comes down to who is doing your install. I had mine welded rather than clamped.

I just put on some DiMisa Tips 3.5 on my PE! Looks and sounds sweet. Couldn't be happier with the change.

But BMW definetly was not thinking when selecting those butt ugly tips. Especially for what the thing costs.

I don't know why anyone would spend 1400 on an exhaust and then try to save an extra 50 to 100 bucks on the install? Take it to the dealer to get installed!

No brainer.
