Gearbox faulty? 335d
Hi Guys,
Noticed something strange with my car recently. When i put it into reverse to back out of my drive way, it just kinda sits there and doesn't move as you would expect an auto to do - prodding the gas sees the revs rise like its in neutral and only after a few prods will it begin to back up slowly then return to normal. It happens rarely but becoming more frequent now. This normally happens after the car has sat on the driveway for the night, its on a completely flat surface. Its a 2008 e92/43k on the clock. The weather doesnt seem to impact this, happens in the Winter and Summer - i thought it might be the brakes sticking, is this possible? Or is the gearbox shot? Cheers |

Can't answer your question but mine does this as well. Always presumed it was just brakes binding as in frequent.
Hopefully someone will confirm nothing to worry about?

I noticed the brakes binding on mine a few times, but it wasn't like the car was in neutral, you could feel it driving against the stuck brakes. Then they would break free and it would shoot forward. So unless you feel this, I wouldn't think its the brakes?

Mine does this too. I also assumed it was the brakes binding.
It does this in D when i set off after the car has been sitting for days. As you say, bit of throttle and it goes. Alternatively, i put it into R, it moves straight away, put it into D and it goes as normal. |

I've noticed this too when reversing off the drive occasionally. I don't think it's because the brakes are binding.
It's probably not that uncommon, just a quirk of a cold gearbox. I hope. |

Sounds like brakes if its been sat overnight. Do you use the handbrake or just leave it in P? Might be worth Trying that for a week or so then alternate back to handbrake to see if it still happens.

Are you guys feeling it is any different from torque converter "drain back", does happen on some gearboxes, but typically gets drive in a second or so, when the revs rise a little.
Are you parking on slopes, that could make it more of a possibility. But the OP's delay of several seconds or so in reverse doesn't sound right at all. BTW, binding brakes would typically 'bang off' if they are the cause. You'd know about it for sure. HighlandPete |

Thanks for the replies guys. I do use the handbrake and must admit i've never felt a bang or felt anything to suggest the brakes were binding. I'll keep an eye on it for it now and see if it gets worse - i have the bmw extended warrenty, is the gearbox covered in this? I'm assuming 43k miles is not reasonable wear and tear.
