Wastegate Vacuum Lines - 68,000 miles. - Both Cracked, 1 really bad
Just a little heads up. If your starting to get wastegate rattle and if you have a decent amount of miles. Check the lines that go to the wastegate actuators to the boost solenoids. Both of mine had cracks and 1 was really bad and causing the wastegate to rattle. Once we replaced the vacuum lines the car feels like new again. No rattle, no hesitation, no popping exhaust note only pure enjoyment now.
The code I was throwing was 30FF (not hitting target boost if i remember correctly) Thanks! Michael |

Thanks for the info. Do you think those lines get cracked over time due to snow/salt on roads up there? Not sure if those lines are covered underneath. My 335i is from PA/NY area so Im wondering if I have the same problem at 49k miles, car was up in NE area from 0-33k miles.

Thanks for sharing. Would you mind also posting part numbers? I've been having wastegate rattle recently so it's worth a try.

Good to hear. About how long did it take to replace? And what would you consider your level of mechanical ability?
I have a slight rattle too, as I am sure most N54 owners have had or will have. I'll probably try to tackle this myself in the upcoming weeks.

Replacing all of the engine vacuum lines in mine took about 20 minutes and 7 feet of vacuum line. I have smaller hands so if you cant get your arm down into the engine bay you may have to lift the car and drop the belly pan to access the wastegate connections.

Stock car? I heard by installing aftermarket downpipe such as AR can cause wastegate rattle? I may be wrong.

Thx. That's pretty reassuring. Doesn't sound too complicated. Probably a silly question, but you just replaced two lines correct? One for each turbo? I know cars typically have all kinds of vacuum lines, but I assume since we are discussing the turbos, it would only be two...

Aftermarket downpipes can't cause wastegate rattle. What happens is you dont notice the rattle until you get aftermarket downpipes then people blame the downpipes. The reality is you've likely had the rattle for a while but the downpipes allow you to hear it more. The vac lines cracking are common practice on any platform. |

I've experienced the worst from this vacuum line issue, engine replacement. Here's my response from a another earlier thread:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ghlight=vacuum (post #4) http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ghlight=vacuum (pictures included) Short story, one of my vacuum line was disconnected. This lead to the rear bank of cylinders to be over pressured. The over boost cause a small cylinder liner crack in #6 and misfire. Not aware of this issue, I had my coolant changed, and the mechanics did not purge the air from the system correctly. I drove the car for 190 miles which over heated the engine. Overheating the engine exacerbated the crack to further enlarge. Coolant pours into the cylinder chamber. Engine is DONE. Here's a quote from my mechanic's e-mail to me, "I just noticed that there is an Apexcone ballast (HID units for the fogs lamps) under the vacuum chambers on the passenger side. When taking it apart, there was a vacuum line hanging. The vacuum line leads to one of the vacuum chambers for your wastegates, the nipple on vacuum chamber was broken off the vacuum chamber". So be aware and check this out.

It's the nature of the beast with vacuum lines and a hot engine bay. It's amazing how well the car drives now. On most vehicles (not speed density from the factory) you can tell when you have a vacuum leak because the car will instantly want to die. On speed density the car will run/idle with an intercooler pipe missing.

Another sign was the turbo whine. I had turbo'd cars before, and chalked it up to nature of the beast. But when I got the car back and now, NO whine what so ever.

Your dealer should carry the cloth covered vacuum line
