The "I ran out of gas, can you help" response.

So I am about to vacuum my car yesterday morning. My favorite self wash place has vacuums for $1 that last for about 5 minutes. Up walks this guy. "I am in that Range Rover-points-and I don't think I am going to make it home". "I tried cashing some scratch offs at the store-points- but it is too early". Huh...? He goes into all sorts of retorts to each question I ask him. He is in a Range Rover with some guy asleep in the passenger seat on a Sunday morning at 7:45am. Stolen? I guess most urban dwellers on this forum have been visited by the "I ran out of gas", guy/girl. I think I can tell when someone really needs help, but isn't this line a bit old? Most of the time they just start tripping over their own tongues when you try and figure out what they are trying to sell. I have a few responses I use with out being an a-hole. What do you guys tell them? FO does not count.

Being from NYC originally, I just tell them I'm Jewish...

Or I simply say I don't carry cash, that usually works, because credit cards can be traced pretty easily.

^ $12 . he must be a very giving guy. When I ask what they really need money for they stick with the gas thing. If they were honest and need a beer or cigs I might help them. Crack, no.
I just thought of one. "Sure I'll help. I have a gas can let's go get your car". "Uh...forget it Mr."

Ohh wait so this wasnt real? Or was it? If it was what did you do?

Me personally if someone asked me for gas for their range rover. If it is new, I would ask why do you drive an expensive car if you cant afford the gas? If I had the cash I would give them 3-4 bucks. That is 1 gallon or more, they need more tough luck.

That way if I did get scammed it was only 3-4 bucks and not 20.

i would tell them to walk...
and all range rovers come with roadside assistance (with complimentary gas, etc)... if they couldn't figure that out, i'd just say, you guys are retarded.

I would think they are full of shit and ask them to see their wallet. $1,000 says they have a credit card or atm card that works.

Yes it was real. Happens once or twice a month. They just seem to pop out of a bush or something most of the time. This was about an 98-99 model RRover. That's why it seemed fishy. He was skinny and had on sunglasses so I could not see his eyes. The passed out/asleep guy in the front seat is what blew it for him. I told him I had only 4 quarters for the machine.

Usually if I am approached by anyone I don't recognize getting into or out of my car I am aggressive and assertive in telling them to depart without pause.

To many psycho's so little time.

We start with the Stern voice, then the pepper Spray, then the ASP, etc... Yeah I'm being dramatic, but generally I don't like to be approached.

Their physical stature has never concerned me. It's their jittery jerky speech. My shit detector goes off w/i a second when anyone gets near me with non normal intentions. It's usually right too.

There is this guy that always pop up out of nowhere at this gas station near the highway in SI. He would come up to me and tell me his car broke down up the road and that he had no money for bus fare and if I can give him a ride. I would always tell him no. Than he would ask if I have any change. I would tell him no and he would leave and go bother the other people. I used to get gas there at least once a week and he would tell me the same thing.

Than there are these people that would come up to you in the subway stations and tell you that they are tourists and just got robbed and have no money to go home.

The last time someone asked me for change I replied: "I was going to ask you the exact same question."

This once happened to me in a rural community gas station my way home. It was a female with a shabby looking hubby/bf whatever in the passenger seat. Looked meth'd out too. She had great tatas though so I said I'd give her 5 bucks if she'd show me her tits. Oh the look on her face was priceless. That OMFG I can't believe you actually said that look. I thought she'd storm away to her bf and I'd have to have an altercation right there at pump#3 but instead she pulled me to the side of the building and flashed right there. Was well worth the 5 bucks for the flash and the endless stories later on.

Normally though I will usually have my hand on my .40 - just in case.

This happened to me when we were driving back from Reno and stopped to get gas in Fresno (God what a shithole). Two tweekers approached me and i could see my girlfriend in the car reaching for the cellphone and getting nervous. Before they could get within 5feet of the car i told them to leave me the fuck alone.Luckily i am 6,2 and 205 ilbs (6 yrs in British Air Force) and they went over to the family in the Escalade.

Next time i am just going to tell them in my best redneck accent "You got a real puurdy mouth there boy" and put on some banjo music.(watch the movie Deliverance).

+1

Anyone who's not trying to scam you would have a credit card on them.
Why don't they just use that.
