Newer diesels will never give the sort of mpg you expect. FACT.

But here are various model years getting compared : http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/x3/diesel%20l4

Looking at around 34-38 real world combined figures.

Garage List
Not a direct comparison but our pre-LCI 3.0d X3, auto, averaged about 28mpg overall. Predominantly tootling about town with occassional motorway journeys (holidays/family visits). I'll have the brochure on my laptop if a comparison with the claims figures is useful; will dig out later.

What are you getting - auto or manual?

2008 X3 2.0d :

Fuel consumption (urban) 34.4 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 51.4 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 43.5 mpg

Compared to real-world 34-38 mpg

2008 X3 3.0d :

Fuel consumption (urban) 28.5 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 44.1 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 36.7 mpg

Compared to Rogers 28 mpg.

And, just for comparison purposes between proposed consumption and true consumption :

2010 335d Touring:

Fuel consumption (urban) 31 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 53.3 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 42.2 mpg

To my 37.7 mpg.

As you can see, your real world combined mpg will be closer to the advertised urban consumption in the X3. Or 5-10 mpg less than the advertised combined figure. In the real world.

Not too bad really, when my A4 Quattro (2012) was a good 15-20 mpg less than the advertised combined figures.

As above, I usually look at the urban mpg and reckon on getting pretty close to that.

Thanks for the replies, it's a manual and its currently getting around the 30 mark (mainly round town driving) which feels a little low (was expecting mid thirties really)

Even on a long motorway run it only returned 38.

Not had it long though so time will tell, but based on your replies its maybe not far off.

Returns better than my 335i though so can't complain too much!

Xs2man - that'll teach you to buy Audi!

Yes it will. I was a big Audi fan (That was was my 4th in as many years). Will never again buy a new diesel Audi. Now might consider a V10 Turbocharged petrol though.

Ha ha. Its not that bad, I had my A3 for a little over 3 years, and my S4 for 2 years. My first A4 was only a year though, and my second (the 2012 177 BHP Black Edition 2.0 TDI Quattro model) for 3 months (March, when it was released, until June) because it was shite on fuel. Moved to the 335d instead. Much happier, although same fuel costs.
