Watches

So, I'm interested in getting a nice watch that's not boring and is of good quality. Something in way of a Panerai type watch, but I don't want to pay that price. I'm going to use it for work and play, so it needs to play a dual role. Price range could be anything below $5k.

Any thoughts?

Note: Just not interested in Tag, Movado, Omega. Too boring and played out for me.

Why not get a used PAM 177 or similar? I find that when I buy something cheaper than what I originally want, I still end up buying it later and could have just saved the money on the cheaper purchase.

Check Timezone, they even split the for sale section into less than or greater than $5k.

Omega PO 8500 would be my choice in your price range if I only had one watch. But you said no Omega, so second would be an IWC Aquatimer 2000.

Maybe consider 2 watches for that price? I have been rotating a PO 2500 and Sinn U1 SDR and my Breitlings have been collecting dust. You could pick them up for less than $5000

....A preowned PAM000 Luminor Base Logo will cost less than $5K.

I know OP said no Movado, and I would normally agree; however, I have to say (biased because I have one) that the Movado Vizio with carbon fiber face and carbon fiber inserts in the stainless steel band is a beautiful watch, under $5k and looks nothing like a traditional Movado, which I have never liked anyway. When I saw this watch, I knew it was "the one" - I don't collect, just have one and wear it daily. Just thought I'd throw that out there. If not, carry on

There are 3 versions, one has a black rubber strap, one a stainless steel strap without the carbon fiber, and the third one I posted which is my personal favorite.

my daily watch is the Omega Speedmaster Professional.
You might not like Omegas, but this one is different, not gimmicky like the "007" Seamaster, but a true classic in the watch world.

Also, its one of the most durable timepieces out there, with its manual movement and plastic face. (most fine watches are Automatic with Sapphire crystal, which shatters) plastic on the other hand, while prone to scratches, never shatters, and is polishable.

Other option is to go for a used Rolex Submariner (16610), a true classic which needs to explanation.

(note. this watch is no longer $195)

I can't believe you put Omega in the same sentence as Movado.

In China Omega is bigger than Rolex. Movado isn't even something a real watch guy considers. too many quartz movements and too easy to buy at the mall.

If you are not really into watches but can readily spend $5k then i would recommend getting a second hand Rolex. Something like a sub or sea-dweller from a reputable watch reseller.

You'll get the best bang for buck for a non-watch guy since they are excellent quality but also have the cache to get you into conversation / noticed / OMG HE HAS A ROLEX! type stuff... let's be honest here too, that is at least a small a part of why we buy this stuff.

Touche`! My problem is I have champagne taste with a beer budget. If I had my choice of an everyday watch it would be a Hublot Big Bang.

I bought myself a Rolex Explorer 2 when I was 18 or 19, I have worn it every day for 15 years. Back then it was $3200. Buy a timeless, quality timepiece and you won't be disappointed.

BTW, I am in the construction industry, I can't believe the abuse this watch has taken and it still looks great.

I certainly want a rolex, but the ones I'm looking at all range into the $8k - $14k brand new. Even at $5k, let's say I find one, I feel the value to "oh shit I spent too much on a watch" ratio is too great in my mind's eye. I'm liking the Sinn U1 though, very classy and seemingly well built and high quality.

if you get a mint Rolex with all the paper work, something that MSRP's for $6k - $7k that you get for $5k, you will not have paid too much because you'll always be able to recoup most of your investment easily if you decide to sell it.

a lot of other watches do not retain resale as readily, or at least take more work to sell. Rolex has such broad appeal in North America that it's a safe bet. As is Omega.

Lower end watches like Tissot, Movado etc. can be bought at outlets or department stores on deep discounts and have little resale potential.

Higher end, more obscure stuff like Glashutte, Zenith, etc. have a more limited market (Serious watch douches) and are a bit tougher to flip than a Rolex.

Hamilton is a good entry swiss watch, however, for a starter auto i would recommend Oris. They are the official BMW F1 watch and you can pick them up off ebay, WUS or timezone for great prices, fully depreciated. I made money on my first Oris and wouldnt lose on the Oris that i still have.

however, even though the quality is there with Oris the wrist-presence is not up to Omega / Rolex / Panerai

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!
