spark plugs came up for service check way before scheduled maintenance

Hi,

My 2009 335i has 56,000km. I just dropped off the car at the dealership as the maintenance item appeared on the dash. They scanned the key and along with the oil change, the spark plugs came up. No big deal, spark plugs are covered by the factory service maintenance program. But the spark plugs shouldn't be due until 70,000km. I asked the SA and they told me that it varies on these cars.

Just hoping if anyone has any insight on this.

It does vary. Standard is 70,000km, but it could happen earlier. And since its all covered by BMW anyway, does not hurt to get a new set installed. I would not worry about it.

Thanks for your feedback. Yah perhaps the ratio of city to highway driving can also play a factor perhaps.

The way you drive does have an effect on how long certain things last and spark plugs are not immune to that.

I strongly suspect that your dealer decided to give you new plugs because BMW will pay for one set during the free maintenance period and the dealer wants to cash in now, in case you take the car to another dealer later on, for your free maintenance. Spark plugs are not a CBS item - there is no icon that comes up instructing them to be changed with the current software version. Nor is there any microfilter icon any longer. I got a free microfilter from my dealer during the maintenance period, even though it was not due by mileage or time. Suspect they were just cashing in and I didn't argue with a free microfilter.

the dealer also changed my spark plugs when I took the car in for the final oil change a week before my warranty expired. I only had 44,000 kms .

Dealer changed mine around 60k to get them covered under warranty. Don't sweat it.
