I need a shift light

Ok. When I am racing or going fast, I am really paying little attention to the gauges. I am looking for a way to connect a shift light to my car. I am sure I am notthe only one getting a little too far into the RPM range.

Has anybody figured it out yet? Can I take that signal from Proceed somehow?

You should be able to buy one that senses RPMs through cigarette lighter socket (calibration necessary).

That is what your ear is for. After you learn your engine you'll be able to tell without a doubt the rpms of your engine by sound.

Actually coming from a car with a shift light I would find this VERY useful...

All you guys who think they shift perfectly everytime are obviously not trying hard enough, either that or you drive around shifting anywhere between 4k and 6k and GUESSING your car is at peak power bc your ear tells you it is...

A scientifically accurate device if I ever came accross one :P

Agreed, a shift light is critical if you really want to squeeze out the right number of RPM before shifting. This car is pretty quiet too, hard to tell by ear.

Someone mentioned something coming from the cigarette lighter.

How would this work, is there some sort of fluctuation in voltage or Frequency or something that can be detected. Sorry noob question I'm sure

I'm all up for getting this done if it's that easy.

The GTech-Pro picks up changes in the vehicle's electrical system, correlating to RPMs, and even offers shift-light functionality. But, it's been my experience that this is imprecise on the BMW. I think an intercept behind the factory RPM gauge or something at the ECU would be the way to go.

Or - we could train a little mouse with a pen light to sit on the steering column. Not dissing anyone, just the thought made me laugh...

The car is quiet and that is concearn to me. Until I get my exhaust, I can not shift precisely at the RPMI want by ear. I really douibt many people can.
My lexus is also inline 6 turbo and its quiet also. Shift light helps a lot when you have a powerband of 8500 RPM.
