Did i blow my engine? *any help would be appreciated*
hi guys i am new here i have a 2007 e92 335i with all the bolt ons.
i was racing my friend yesterday and i think i might of blown the engine.. -i mis-shifted and over revved the engine -engine shut down immediately and the oil light came on -car would not start after, no clicking noises, when i push button nothing -when i got the car towed there was a pool about 1L of oil underneath its in a shop now, getting checked on monday they said a used engine swap is gonna run be about 10K and i have to pay out of my own pocket and i just got the car last week! ***UPDATE*** Anyways I hope people can learn from my mistakes, there was indeed damage to the engine I have to get a new one and yes it costed $10,000 (engine+labour costs) the problem was the valve was bent in cylinder #2 UPDATE: i just talked with the mechanic, apparently the whole engine is toast. the pulley came off, all my belts broke and apparently the cylinders bent all my valves, basically whole thing went ka-boom. let this be a lesson for everyone, definitely be careful when you are shifting and if you happen to over rev, clutch in immediately Last edited by wuhantang; 03-05-2014 at 12:44 PM.. |

The problem was in the seat.

There was a used N54 engine for sale in this forum awhile back for $6K I believe. Fairly low miles too I think.
Best of luck man

what? what does that even mean?
All I am saying is; when these things happen, it's wise to inspect the whole motor and find out what went wrong. People say buy a new motor when all of the accessories and more than likely head are clearly still going to be good. A shortblock (bottom end) which is where the majority of stuff that typically goes wrong is; is much cheaper than a whole new motor. I found one on Ebay for $1900.

Ok there's something I am not getting about this post. I don't get how miss-shifting will blow up an engine except if you go from say 4th gear to say like 1st then maybe I can see that possible. (I don't want to believe that you did something like that). Doesn't BMW cars have rev limiter and engine cut off going into/after red line? I just picked up a 2008 335xi and I am not in no position to find out about it but I used to drive a car that was 18 years old and had sure technology and I will assume BMW will. Actually when I was in the market for a 335, I test drove a 2008 335xi. I miss-shift going from 4 to 5 but instead went to 3, granted I wasn't probably pushing it as hard the only thing I noticed was the smell of burnt clutch.
Can someone explain to me how this could possible happen? |

I admit I've not had to rebuild a car motor but I've done a few motorcycles. Engines don't "blow" -- specific parts fail. Fix those parts. Why replace an entire motor? Rods, bearings, pins, even a crankshaft....all replaceable. You can even do some of that without pulling the motor.
At the very least diagnose the failure first. |

If a rod failed likely the bearing did some wiping on the crank as well, cyl. walls could be scored... if a rod *broke* the block is likely toast... if you have the time to tear down and inspect do it, but personally I think I'd rather drop in a low mile used engine or else have the whole bottom end pro rebuilt (likely more expensive) than gamble on component repairs on an expensive car like a BMW (especially one where it's labor intensive to pull the engine)
