Does this sound like turbo/wastegate/actuator fail?

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Here is a vid of the infamous turbo/wastegate/actuator issue (sorry idk how to post the vid to my post.

Anyone who has had this warrantied with the 8/82k extended warranty..... did yours sound like this?

Im just wondering if this would be warrantied bc it annoys the **** outta me

I was told by the dealer that they will take everything apart and inspect it but if BMW decides it isn't within the parameters of being warrantied I will have to pay for the labor costs associated with disassembling... ($2,000+).

Mine sounds EXACTLY the same and I am thinking about bringing it in for inspection and see if I can get the turbos replaced.

Could just be poor actuator adjustment. But often times the internal wastegates wear so severely that there is no fixing it aside for total turbo replacement (or extensive wastegate rebuilds which no one really offers as the turbos have to come off to do that either way).

If you are not very mechanically inclined, you are going to have to let the dealer sort it out. If you have other mods on the car though when they do, it is almost certain they will not cover you. If you do not have mods, then you have great chances of being covered (for total turbo replacement).

Rob,

Thanks for the details. Im mechanically inclined however pulling the turbo's off and fixing the problem is out of my reach esp as I don't have access to all the tools and a shop.... not to mention its warrantied.

With that said the only engine mods I have are:
• SuperSprint mufflers
• AA Blow Off Valve
• AFE Dual Cone Intake
• Split Sec Turbo Tuner (I spoke to SS and they said since my car is an 02/2007 that the tune is UNTRACEABLE).... I hope this is true. Maybe someone could confirm????
• BMS OCC (I dont think I would have to take this off????)

So I guess I'll take everything off and take it in and CROSS MY FINGERS!

Mine sound the same aswell. However, the car still runs strong but I have noticed that it has developed a pretty noticable hesitation when going WOT. Demodding the car in the next few weeks and taking it in. OP keep us posted.

RobBeck,

How would one attempt to adjust the actuators without having to pull the motor out?

Mine sounds the same or worse but they will not do anything until it throws 30ff code for me. Others have had better luck.

I remember seeing a post a while back where someone figured out a process for the front one... it is a pain. The rear one isnt bad at all. Pending on the mileage of the car though, and how long it has been rattling... usually the wastegate internals are toast and adjustments are just a last ditch effort to buy a little more time if even possible.

Mine sound identical. Literally just took it in the shop last Thursday! No issues what so ever, everything was covered. Hopefully I should have my car back soon and I'll update ya if anything happens!

JamesM3M5 proved it could be done without pulling the turbos. I tackled it after he posted it and its as every bit a pain as indicated, but is great if you dont want to buy new units and have time to kill.

Is your car still under any kind of warranty OTHER THAN the 8yr/82k waste gate/actuator warranty??

I have about 7k miles left on the manufactures warranty. However regardless as long as your under 82k you should be fine. Ofc every place is different, but my SA was even telling me I shouldn't have any problems with mods unless I tune, or pay 800 bucks for the 20 hp+ tune...ya no haha. I think the only real benefit of having manufactures warranty still is the free loaner, but I'd have to imagine you still get one since its a warranty. I went in acting dumb, knowing it was the waste gate, just said car is making a funny noise! Made an appt was real polite, and no issues. Just didn't want to give them any reason to decline me. He called and said it sounds like waste gate, were trying everything to fix if not there just going to replace turbos. I've heard horror stories about my dealership, I'm in San Antonio, but they have been pretty good so far!

Had mine adjusted in December. They were loud as hell! Dealer would only adjust them and not replace anything under warranty as its Canada. Total amount to adjust was $2600. And as of today I started hearing them rattle again. Sure made me happy. Especially since I have no more warranty at all. CPO was up end of December.

Mine sound the same as well. Just recently noticed it getting louder. I'll call dealer as well.

Subscribed. I have a consistently loud rattle when inlet off the throttle, no matter if the engine is warmed up or not. I'm at almost 75k miles. I also have downpipes though. I don't feel like swapping them out with stock pipes unless I really have to. I'm probably going to take a chance and bring it in soon and see what they'll do. Looking forward to hearing others experiences.

when i brought my car in for wastegates rattle, it had ER CP, forge DVs, ETS FMIC, but i did have stock DP at the time, they just replaced it no question asked. of cuz i think if the SA is cool enough or mod friendly plays a role in this case too.

I'm jealous of all you guys still under warranty! Mine are horrendous, why can't money grow on trees so I can upgrade already! Lol well atleast you don't have the 30FF code that I have, I can't even enjoy my daily driver anymore, I'm about to put my JB4 on the "NA" mode until I can get me some upgraded twins.... Goodluck and I wouldn't chance having downpipes being on if you really want those turbos replaced

if you allow yourself to get raped by the dealer for $2000 just to have them inspect, you might as well just upgrade to turbos that have upgraded wastegate components and have an indy shop do it. don't get stock turbos again

Don't waste your money at BMW.. save a few bucks an take the chance to get upgraded turbos.

Meanwhile try wastegate compensation or adjust the actuator. I will have to do the same..
