See My Own Mr5 Intake, Paper Filter then K&N

I Was Using Oiled Dci, Worry About The Hot Soak, Also Lots Of People Talking About The High Flow Filter Can Pass Big Dirt ComparING TO Paper Filter. So I Created My Own Mr 5 Filter. Same As The Others But Used A Big Paper FILTER.
REMOVED THE STEER WHEEL OIL BRACKET AND MADE A NEW BRACKET AND RELOCATED TO FRONT.
EVERYTHING IS FROM EBAY EXCEPT THE FILTER THAT IS FROM AUTOZONE. THE FILTER ISTOO WHITE SO I COVERED WITH A NYLON SOCK THAT IS FROM DOLLAR STORE, IT HELPS FILTER TOO,LOL.
TOTAL PRICE $70 INCLUDING THE 3” HOLE SAW PLUS TWO HOURS WEEKEMD TIME.
THE NEW FILTER AREA IS SAME AS THE STOCK FILTER, SO THE FRICTION IS HALF AND FLOW SHOULD BE DOUBLE. TOTAL AREA IS BIGGER THAN DCI. AS IT IS VERY FRONT, THE AIR SHOULD BE COOLER ALSO. MOST IMPORTANT IS THE ENGINE BAY IS MUCH CLEANER, JUST DONT LIKE THE DCI UNFINISHED LOOKING.

i like the clean look but how would it preform against the dci? i know mr5 has some datalogs but his is with high flow filters not paper ones and his was a dinan style with the filter placed behind the bumper

I think I don't need to do the dyno test but I know this is better than stock. The main reason is worrying about the high flow filter filtration efficiency and the looking. The heat soak is less concerned but this is cooler than DCI.

Nice job! Are you using the stock charge pipe with stock dv's? I was thinking about a Mr. 5, but others have said they've had fitment problems with the ER CP and forge DV's.

everything is stock, see the 3rd picture, i used a tiewrap to tie the pipe to make the room for the 3" silicon 45 degree elbow.

I just drove 30 mile local and the new filter is just warm not hot as the DCI. there is lots of opening to cool air at that location. If you really need more cool air you can drill holes on the plastic fender cover under the filter but need to worry about the water as papar filter hates water.

I have a stock air filter box with a hole in the side for a Mr 5 style setup that I never installed because I couldn't find a good way to get piping down to the bumper and didn't know which cone filter to put it ( I bought this setup from a member here and he didn't ship with cone filter and the tubes he used were "coily". Since then this has been siting in my garage.

With that said - if this works for you without heatsoak (filter is not in the bumper) - can you please give links to the hoses, brackets and filter you used?
thanks!

The new filter is definitely cooler tha the DCI even cooler than the stock air box.
All parts are from EBay, the 3" flange and the pipe are from this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151050669854...84.m1439.l2649
The pipe connector is this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/150956818093...84.m1439.l2649
The silicon 45 degree elbow is this, you need to cut it to fit on both end.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251276297189...84.m1439.l2649
The filter is this
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2512&ppt=C0023
The filter opening is bigger than the pipe, I used a rubber o-ring that is from previous DCI project, it fills the gap perfectly. The nice thing for this filter is it has a lip you can worm clamp it.

At the first stage I don't know how many parts I need so I ordered double for the nipple connector and the 45 elbow, also I have another o-ring. I can sell it for $25 plus shipping. Also if you like K&N, I have a lightly used K&N filter that is perfectly fit to that location and has 3" open. $25 for it also.

I don't see how you're getting cool air to that filter, where's it coming from? That's kind of like the Helix setup which I don't think claims to get cool air to the filter; it's kind of a compromise, hot air to that filter (as far as I can see) and still cool air from the stock intake....I'd rather have that though than all hot air as with a dci...I'm getting ready to go with the "classic" Mr5 intake myself with filter down near the bumper. I'm using a 2.5" hose though since I have the structural bar in the way of the routing (E92).

Before I did this mod I had the same thought as you, because I don't care the hot air but the high flow filter efficiency, I did this mod anyway. But after one day driving in different conditions, I am impressed. After driving I opened the hood (5 times today) and use my hand to feel the temperature, doesn't matter high way or local( in LA rush hour outside is 90 degree), the new filter is always cooler , much cooler than the stock air box and the stock duct. Actually when the PS tank and bracket were removed you can see thought the engine bay and see the ground from there, also just beside the stock air box, on right lower side there are several 1" ID holes can pass the air in. The distance is another help as the new filter is on the far side. I used to have the DCI but I cannot even touch it after driving, it burns. The stock air is not that bad but still very hot at least on the surface, don't know the inside temperature yet. I will say the inside is not cool as it is sitting right on the engine that is the ingest heat source.
I will put a remote temperature sensor in the air box and the new filter to test the temp when I am driving.
Yes, the in bumper Mr5 is for sure cooler then mine but there are couple things we need to consider: 1 the long pipe with more turns, it has more pressure drop than shot straight pipe. 2. As the bumper is low so water will splash on the filter more or less, with cotton high flow filter it is not a big of deal as it will dry over time. small amount of water into the engine is not bad also. But if the paper filter meets water it will be a nightmare.
My conclusion is
if you like high flow filter and dont like heatsaok, go with in bumper Mr5.
If you think paper filter is safer, my design is approved.
If you don't mind the heat soak and like high flow filter, DCI is your meat
If you need real high flow, open the air box, no filter at all. HAHA.

I would love to see some temp sensor data, would be cool if you could put one in the stock box and one inside that filter of yours too and monitor real time. I like the panty hose idea too, I guess it's the homegrown version of the filter covers you can buy, probably the same thing more or less. I hear ya also on the tube twists and turns for the in bumper mr5; I wish it was more of a straight shot and the 2.5" tube I plan on using should be bigger too but I can't use the 3" because of the structure bar that the coupe has. I'm going to have to look for these air holes ur talking about too....

Hi guys - where do you find the metal couplers you have connected to the stock air box?

You said you could see out the bottom, does the car have a belly pan on it?. Looks like a nice clean job congrats.

Nice clean job! I was seriously thinking about doing this as well. However, some thoughts crossed my mind since this is not my area of expertise. Is it possible that your filter is cooler because part of the intake air from the stock air box is flowing out your paper filter? Related to that question is, can someone explain to me at least intuitively why the extra intake path from the new filter wouldn't actually be an extra outlet path (so air would actually be diverted into the engine bay instead of into the engine)?

Thanks!

No expert but I think because of intake constant suction effect pulls air "in" from any and all openings.

That is not possible as the outside is alway higher pressure than the suction.
