BMW Revises Recommended Oil Change Intervals to 10,000 Miles for 2014+ Models

COMMENTS

BMW has changed its long time recommended oil change mileage intervals for all 2014 models and beyond. The changes apply to all vehicles produced from July 2013 on.

Previously, BMW recommended a 15,000 mile / 24 month Condition Based Service interval, but as of July 2013, the new basic interval will be every 10,000 miles / 12 months. This applies to both gasoline and diesel models.

The Z4 roadster, M5/M6 and ActiveHybrids have some special recommendations, which you can see in the announcement and charts below.

So even though there are F30s with the same engines as E90s we should still have an extra 5K before an oil change? Not understanding their thinking behind this.

Same with the F10/F11. Nice and warm feeling when it comes to long term reliability!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ thats the meaning. They are guessing that you will soon be out of your lease and so, why bother with the older cars. Guess the CPO cars are starting to have high milage issues???

Exactly my thoughts.

I understand that with the N55 at least, there were some software changes, hence the delay of the PPK.

But you can't honestly defend the fact that a 2013 or earlier F30 will be as reliable as a 2014 with this mandate.

Whatever, mine's a lease. Sucks for the next owner, I guess.

still twice as long as they should be. every 5k miles or 6 months, no matter what car, motor, or brand. oils cheap, motors are not, why skimp on something so important?

I noticed this in the 4 series order guide. I like the change, more oil changes under warranty.

So we trusted BMW with their recommended times. (Sorta) then they change it on us so we feel we F'ed up our cars. Nice. Too late now.

Wonder what would happen if you coded 8KL to your VO in place of 8KC...

I've always gone 12k and never had any problems. But with synthetic of course.

Right I mean I have an N55....I change my oil every 5K-7500 as it is and I own my car because frankly 15K on one oil change is a bit long and everyone knows BMW engines are finicky.

So my 2013 with a build date of June 28, 2013 isn't eligible?

WTF? What exactly is option 8KC? I have a 2012 328i, with the EXACT SAME ENGINE as a 2014 328i but the recommended oil change mileage is different? Uh, something doesn't add-up or I'm not understanding this correctly.

Classic. Maybe people will finally understand the old 15,000+ mile changes came from the bean-counters, not the engineers.

Last year GM shortened its oil change intervals too.

with my e90 and f10, the dealer does 1 oil change a year regardless of mileage for me. typically within 10-12kmi. oil is cheap, the car isnt. if you cant afford to get the oil changes outside of maintenance package, you should not own a car let alone a bmw

Glad I've been doing a 7500 mile oil change on both our N55s since day one. I change at 7500 then let dealer change at the normal 15k.

Don't worry nothing bad has happened to your car. As long as you used good quality synthetic oil, it could have even kept going on for many more miles without any harm.

Oil change intervals are always artificially managed by manufacturers.

I had my 15k mile oil examined at blackstone and I remember the condition of the oil was not as bad as I had feared. Car had around 40k miles at the time and I drive pretty hard. Sounds crazy but probably could have gone another 3k based on the oil condition. I'll look for my report when I go home tonight.

Here are other member's oil analysis:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=532197
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=631045

I've always wanted to have my oil examined after a track day to see if it is really necessary to change it right after like some of my friends insist.

When I called them to discuss my results they made 3 comments:
1. We are using synthetic which lasts longer as shown on tests
2. 3k intervals is a good mantra but with modern cars can be too early
3. Our N54 engine is very well designed.

They want you to change it at long intervals so it slowly a tears your car apart, and you end up at the dealer again.. Either way, you need to change every 5k-7500m.. 10k is nuts

I would never go past 10k miles on an oil change. But then again I go above and beyond service requirements.
