Just got my 2009 e92 335 (65k miles) fixed at an indy shop in Houston (about a week ago) due to a problem with it's lower fuel pump (gave me a cold start and shaky acceleration) and now tonight randomly my car just gave me an error saying "Engine overheated. Turn car off now" and the car was completely out of power. Accelerator wasn't responding.

Has this happened to anyone else? Could it be something that went wrong at the Indy shop that caused this to happen? I mean this was so out of the blue.

The temperature reading on the gauge reads around 245ish (it was close to the 250 mark, but on the 160 side) the car was not hot when I opened the hood (even when the message said not to), I even felt around a little and everything felt normal.

My thinking:
Temperature sensor gone haywire? The car is not hot, but the sensor/computer has an error and is telling my car that it is. Which is causing it to give me the error. Is this possible?

What does e90post think?

Thanks in advance!

I think thats the water pump overheating which is not related to the oil temperature gauge.

Also I know 4-5 people who had the water pump go out right around 60-65k miles. Its about a $900-$1200 repair. Just looks like bad luck man, hope you have no more issues after this.

Yep, sounds like the water pump. Its electric on these cars and not cheap.

Yeah..my first thought would be the water pump too bro...have it check out
If it's the water pump, replace your thermo stats too while you're at it

Thanks a lot guys. Yea I guess it's just bad luck and coincidence that it happened right after that low fuel pump failure. Hopefully no other issues arise!

It's the water pump. The CPU will not actually let the engine get hot enough to overheat once the water pump malfunctions. When it craps out, it tells you it's likely to overheat and cuts off power to prevent actual overheating and damage. You can diy, but it's a huge pia if it's your first time doing something like this. But definitely doable.

Water pump for sure. And that temp gauge you were reading is the oil temp. Same thing happened to me late at night after a looking ass day while in a torrential downpour. Not my idea of a good time to say the least.

Just got the thermostat, water pump, and spark plugs replaced. Car is running smooth once again with no hesitation in acceleration. Now the car reads no misfiring or any fault codes. Cost a little over a grand . Hopefully no more issues come up. The mechanic said this is common for the spark plugs to go out around 45k and water pump around 65k does this sound right?

Yes to both.

With a modified car, the plugs start showing their performance loss closer to 15-20k miles.

Just had my water pump go out a few weeks ago, right at 48K. The gold warranty that I purchased has paid for itself 3 times. It's amazing how many issues this car has. It's in the shop now getting injectors replaced under warranty.

That's your water pump crapping out, sorry man.

My water pump died just 3 weeks back. And the battery 1 week after (I think the shop primed the coolant without a trickle charger, damnit). The timing of your lower fuel pump crapping out is just bad luck (that can go anytime, really)

You're around that mileage where things will need to be replaced if they haven't been already.

Also, your dash reads the oil temp, not coolant temp. It's hard to tell your car is overheating just by seeing/feeling the engine heat (unless it's smoking which is really bad unless your car is from the 1980's). Sorry got to this thread real late.

ha ha good luck, get rid of it while you can

at this point i think n54 powered cars are great as a weekend/track car and are way to unreliable for a daily driver
