Oil for 328d
My dealer doesn't have either the oil filter the oil for the new BMW 328d. The manual says use Castrol SLX. There are two Castrol SLX oils. One is a Castrol SLX OE, the other is Castrol SLX LL03. Which one do I get? I found the oil filter at Bavarian Autosports, but I don't know which oil to get. Anyone know? Also what is the oil capacity of the N47 engine in the 328d?
Thanks ahead of time. I'll be doing a break in oil change at about 1500 miles. |

There have also been some very good oil discussions on the diesel forum : http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=377 |

First off, you do not need to do a "break-in" oil change at 1500 mi and, in my opinion, you should definitely not drain the factory fill so soon. Modern machining and mfring methods long ago relegated the need to do a 1500 mi drain of the factory fill to the dustbin of lube mythology - - along with the the need to do 3000 mi oil changes.
The factory fill on your 328d is most likely an oil made by the German lube mfr FUCHS. They do many of the special factory fill oils for German car mfrs, particularly the diesels, and in fact are known in Europe as "FUCHS, the factory fill specialist". The factory fill on the BMW 335d is a FUCHS oil so I'm guessing that the same holds true for your 328d. FUCHS is one of the oldest and most innovative lube mfrs in the world. They did most of the original research and development on synthetic oils back in the 1930's. Here is what a very experienced lubricants engineer (particularly with diesel oils) has written on the subject of factory fills: "Many modern engines have unique lubricants as their Factory fill and in some cases a special specification lubricant many be needed. This is for specific “bedding in” reasons and often depends on the engine’s design and certainly on its “wear face” metallurgy! People that chose to ignore the Manufacturer’s advice concerning the first oil change period and the lubricant to be used then are IMO quite foolhardy – especially if they intend to keep their vehicle for many years." So your factory fill may be liquid gold. Don't dump it. I believe the service fill oil spec'd by BMW for their diesels is Castrol SLX Professional OE 5w30. I believe the BMW spec LL03 applies to diesels - - not sure. The LL04 spec is for low sulfur and ash oils good for euro BMW's. Your dealer should know what brand oil BMW requires for the 328d, and if they don't have it in stock they should be able to get in a matter of days. What's their problem? Hopefully when it comes time to do the 10k oil service, their techs will know how much oil to put in the car!

Did a little bit of quick research. The Castrol SLX Professional LL03 oil is an oil that comes in a gold bottle and is the oil made for VW/Audi diesels with diesel particulate filters. So it is not the variety of SLX made for your 328d.
Anyway, your dealer should know exactly the type of oil BMW wants in your 328d and how much is needed for an oil service. You may want to find another BMW dealer.

Let's be really clear here. BMW uses LL-04 oil in all their diesels - EU or US/CA.
The LL-03 oil is VW/Audi and is a good choice for top-off if you can't find LL-04. Since 2006, diesel in the US/CA has been classified as "low-sulfur": it has 15 Ppm sulfur or less (as opposed to EU, which is 10 ppm or less.) You must use a low-SAPS oil to keep the DPF and catalyst systems happy. (Conversely, gasoline/petrol in the US/CA is not low sulfur, and you should not use LL-04 in gas engines, unlike in EU.) I don't want to repeat myself here, because the links I gave in my previous post have exhaustive discussions of all this. However, let me know and I'll write a treatise on oil for our diesels (I'm not an expert, but know where all the bodies are buried.) |

Floyd is right. I once had a 335d and checked some of my used oil analyses and the Castrol SLX OE spec'd by BMW for their diesels is rated BMW LL04. Sorry if I confused things.

My guess is that any LL-01 damage(assuming proper LL-04 is refilled promptly) will manifest itself as smog issue after 125k-150k miles, so probably it is not worth the worries. |

Pennzoil now makes a ll-04 oil compatible with the n47. I just did my first oil change with it and car runs smooth like butter.. Its Pennzoil Euro L 5w30. Retails in Canada for $55 and on sale for $31 .. there's a also rebates from Pennzoil.. by far the cheapest ll-04 that i know that's readily available at local auto parts stores.

There are plenty of parts houses which sell LL04 other than Amazon (FCP Euro, ECS tuning, etc.)

Look up applications here:
https://www.amsoil.com/lookup/auto-and-light-truck/ Bore down to the product data sheet to find that the oils for BMW have been approved by BMW. |
