Mercury Auto Insurance

I need some feedback on those who have or had Mercury as their auto insurance carrier. My co workers told me they're shady. I called AIS and they told me Mercury was the cheapest. But I know cheapest ain't always the best. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mercury Ins was nice and cheap until you have an accident...I'd stay away from them.

Yeah that's what I heard, so I ended up getting the insurance affiliated with Costco. It was only a little more expensive, but with extra coverage and great customer service.

Costco insurance is backed by IDS under Ameriprise. Exellent coverage for the price. I have my 07 328 and 06 330 insured for $900/6mo. I used to have the cheapest insurance in California "Esurance" and in the last renewal, they increased to $820/6mo/330.

I may be an exception, and I acknowledge that, but I've had Mercury as my only insurance EVER and never had any issues.

I've had two accident experiences. One time I was rear ended on the freeway, clearly the other drivers fault, and was able to get my car back in a somewhat decent time frame with little hassle.

The other time was in the last year. I loaned my brother my pickup truck for a couple days and he wrecked it. The idiot ran a red light and t-boned a guy. I was fully covered by Mercury and the car was totaled. Not too much hassle that time either.

One thing with them is that their customer service is indeed not the greatest, so you just have to be on them often, calling your claims adjuster for updates, etc. In my opinion, that tiny bit of hassle is worth the monetary savings.

+1 They were very nice and cheap but when I actually had an accident they took forever! They wanted me to drive to someone who could give me an estimate but didn't tell me the name of the place so I couldn't find it. (Didn't expect it to be a Oldsmobile dealership!) Then it took them a while to go to the car and wanted me to use their guys and took forever to pay. Not a great experience. However this was many moons ago.

I use AAA now. Good pricing and great service!

Damn... I use Mercury now. No problems yet....but no accidents--so no reason to need them yet.

Well, there's nothing to worry about with mercury, they are just really up tight in the underwriting department. Your problem is your going to use AIS, they'll charge you a nice $100-150 broker fee, so go to a different agent, or give me a call I'll get you the Mercury policy with no broker fees.

Yeah. Mercury is odd in their claims process, but if you know your rights they can't do much. This is regarding Homeowners insurance, which Mercury is not a great company, their bread and butter is Auto Insurance. If you were looking to have your Auto Insurance packaged with Homeowners they're other companies with better rates and service for Homeowners, i.e. Travelers, Safeco, and Allied (Nationwide, for all those on the East Coast.)
