NGK plugs and cold start

Had a misfire in cylinder 5 only when running map5 with E85, replaced all the plugs with NGK's, gapped them perfectly to .022 with a feeler gauge and on the first start of the day it runs slightly rough until RPM's drop to 600 then it runs perfectly the rest of the day.

No more misfires and it runs strong again otherwise.

I assume this is normal?

My car does the same with the NGK plugs, have you had your coils replaced recently?

Gap cylinder 5 to 0.024" and see if that fixes the problem. Gapping to 0.022" may be too aggressive.

Not since I've owned the car but original owner could have.
I noticed a date on them, 07/06/2013 to that effect.

When I did the plug changed I swapped coil 1 and 5 to aid in troubleshooting, no misfire codes yet.

Just on #5? Will do.

Is there something I should know about #5 cylinder?
It's sparkplug was the worst of the 6 when I took the original plugs out.

I had a similar issue but I forgot which cylinder. And it fixed the issue. I think the recommended 0.022" gap is just too aggressive. It's possible, you're injectors are leaking if the issue continues.

I would try to go with gapping to 0.024" first and if it doesn't fix it, go back to stock, just for cylinder 5 to see if misfires go away. Then on to coils, injectors then valve cleaning as the last resort.

Gapped them to .24, no difference.

Not sure where to go next.

I'm going to rule out intake valve cleaning, car only has 28K and the issue appeared overnight.

If it were coils it wouldn't just be a cold start issue right?

That would leave a leaky injector overnight as the issue?

I called BMW and check about the injector recall to see if they were original injectors and it had the HPFP and injectors replaced back in 2011.

The SA mentioned the injectors might still be under some kind of BMW warranty for the recall work and I did mention I have a 3rd party warranty also.

So I might just give the car to BMW, see if it's still covered and if not try to fall back on the 3rd party warranty.

Worst case I'll take the car back and just figure out which injector is causing the issue and replace/recode myself.

I dunno, slightly disappointed I'm in this situation already after 5K miles of ownership but I did know what I was signing up for I guess.

Just an update:

Switch back to factory plugs and cold start idle issue is gone.

I reset adaptions and that helped a bunch but with the NGK's it still would mis a bit for the first 30 seconds.

Did you leave them gapped at 0.024 or go back to 0.022?

Having a very similar issue after switching to the colder plugs. Difference is my misfire is occurring at WOT.

Thank

Recently replace my plugs with the ngk 5992. Gapped to .022 - .023 Warm idle feels slightly smoother but nothing significantly different on cold startup. Engine ticking at idle does sound louder then before.

E85 In the winter sucks. Probably that's what's making it misfire

Then its probably not your plugs if they are new and gapped correctly. check your codes and swap coils.

Didn't ever go back to .022 from .024, noticed no difference.

I've had no WOT issues though, just cold start idle issues.

Have the same problem. Was getting misfires on cylinder 1 and 6 at WOT. Installed ngk plugs gapped to .22 and still would misfire at WOT. Had all my injectors replaced and came to find out both injectors 1 and 6 were installed without the crush ring. Now car runs strong at WOT but my first cold start of the day is rough and the car is misfiring enough to throw shadow codes. Won't trigger a cel, but when I scan for codes on my cobb it shows misfire on cylinder 3-4-6. Running 50-60% e85. I'll try putting my stock plugs back in and see if cold starts get better.

mine are gapped to .022 and I notice cold starts on e60 in sub 30 degree weather when I haven't started/driven the car for 3-4 days, can be quite rough.
