Turbos Replaced: Increased Fuel Economy.

Hello everyone. I use this website more than I post but I wanted post some data points:

-Taken to BMW due to Wastegate rattle around 70K.
-Both Turbos replaced *note* all software i.e. hoses replaced also IAW SI B01 02 12
-Gas mileage 65-70 MPH after replacement: 30 MPG ~2 MPG increase
-Better throttle response.
-No updates to the DME
-Approximate value for parts: 3K

I was shocked at the increase in gas mileage after the install. I am not sure if the new replacement turbo design is more efficient.....

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post.

Cheers!

True. But this car never achieved those numbers.

Maybe the mileage was never reset. After the install they reset the computer/ reconnected the battery. Then you did highway mileage with a light foot. How many times did you reset the BC stalk for mileage and not the trip meter?

The mileage counter was reset almost weekly. The battery was disconnected many times when I would work on the car.
It could be the car has broken in more. It is just another data point.

Cheers!

Furthermore, I missed one of your questions.
Highway driving using my cruise control. No change in highway operation.

That's good news I'm 81,600 miles just got car back with new turbos, hpfp, valve cleaning........... My first tank 13.8mpg. Car drives like a dream, just can't seem to get my foot off the gas pedal.

I hope to hit those #'s once I start driving responsibly again

If you are burning less oil, your octane is higher (e.g old turbos leaking).

I got new turbos at the same mileage (70,300 to be exact). I can't tell ANY difference in performance or gas mileage. I still hear the rattle on start up too. A LOT less smoke though.

Did you pay for the valve cleaning?

For me, my car never uses any oil. I change it every 6 months.

My sa said I could leave my fmic, dci, and dv's on bc they didn't affect the wastegates and he replaced them along w actuator arm. My turbos were fine and did not get replaced, would have been nice though.

I had oil filter housing gasket replaced about a yr ago, it was allowing/leaking water to be burned off causing a vapor trail........ Looked like burning oil but wasn't it had a sweet smell and didn't behave like smoke. And I was losing water @ gal/week.
I took car in due to smoking, thought it might be the same problem. Turns out I had leaking injectors, Which were replaced also a yr ago, dumping gas at idle causing clouds of smoke, very annoying. Asked the tech to take a good look at turbos due to rattle and mileage. Tech said they appeared to be good but he managed to get approval to replace them, once off he showed me pics of bad leaking waste gates and binding actuators. That somehow required plugs to be replaced, oil change and he through in valve cleaning for $300 cash. Durning road test he said hpfp failed so now that gets replaced. tech found a bent control arm and leaking radiator hose, replaced at cost of new parts only.
This guy was awesome and did impeccable work. I love my car all over again

Nice. Thanks for information. I was just curious what the cost was for the valve cleaning.

Valve cleaning wasn't on paper, he warranted all the parts and labor I gave him $300 cash for valve cleaning on the side
