Ferrari Shows New 2014 F1 Engine

Quote:
Usually manufacturers are very secretive about its F1 technology. But fortunately only up to a certain stage. In 2014 Formula One will see one of the most significant engine changes in its history.

The switch from a 2,4-litre, V8 naturally-aspirated engine to a 1,6-litre, V6 turbocharged engine will change several technical characteristics of the car. The energy recuperation system will be more advanced while the driver will be able to boost engine power with the battery for up to 30 seconds.

Watch as the Ferrari directors responsible for the engine talk us through the new technology.

Wait a sec, there is a generator hooked directly to the shaft of the turbocharger? That is insane to imagine. What sort of RPM is that turning at? How did they design a turbo that can spool with all that resistance? Can't wait to see how this technology pans out.

Very cool but all of the different engines will blow up at least once this season. Hopefully more than once for the Renaults.

Exactly.

But I still hope Ferrari will keep its NA V12 streetengines forever.

Cheers

Yeah it's amazing how they get that working. Lightweight parts and a lot of lubrication lol

How many years until we see our turbocharged cars with that generator system? This season should be exciting to watch.

A 1.6L v6 that revs to 15,000 rpm is insane. IIRC the generator runs off of wasted heat (hot side turbo) I am pretty sure it isn't directly connected to it.

Running the 1.6 to 15k isn't nearly as insane as running the 3.0 V10's up to 20k. The only reason they 'only' rev to 15k is because the rev limit is capped. Its been capped for the past several years.

There will be two forms of generators in the car; one will be hooked up the turbine shaft and one will be hooked to the gearbox/rear-wheels like the KERS of previous years. The turbine generator will either have a clutch on it to disconnect it from the turbine or it will stay at constant speed and always keep the turbo spooled up. I think it will be more the latter. There is debate if the engines will have wastegates or not, they almost certainly will not have blow-off valves. This year will be all about recovering as much energy as possible.

Oh yeah, in case you did not know, F1 engines don't have valve springs. They use pneumatics to hold the valve closed; springs go into hysteresis at some point about 15k.

Honestly, I don't think it will be long. Honda is already hinting that they are developing a whole range of turbo engines and that is their impetus for returning to F1 as a engine supplier in 2015.
