Wait a sec, there is a generator hooked directly to the shaft of the turbocharger? That is insane to imagine. What sort of RPM is that turning at? How did they design a turbo that can spool with all that resistance? Can't wait to see how this technology pans out.

How many years until we see our turbocharged cars with that generator system? This season should be exciting to watch.

A 1.6L v6 that revs to 15,000 rpm is insane. IIRC the generator runs off of wasted heat (hot side turbo) I am pretty sure it isn't directly connected to it.

Running the 1.6 to 15k isn't nearly as insane as running the 3.0 V10's up to 20k. The only reason they 'only' rev to 15k is because the rev limit is capped. Its been capped for the past several years.
There will be two forms of generators in the car; one will be hooked up the turbine shaft and one will be hooked to the gearbox/rear-wheels like the KERS of previous years. The turbine generator will either have a clutch on it to disconnect it from the turbine or it will stay at constant speed and always keep the turbo spooled up. I think it will be more the latter. There is debate if the engines will have wastegates or not, they almost certainly will not have blow-off valves. This year will be all about recovering as much energy as possible. Oh yeah, in case you did not know, F1 engines don't have valve springs. They use pneumatics to hold the valve closed; springs go into hysteresis at some point about 15k. Quote:

This is the kind of stuff that makes F1 so special. Can't wait for this season to start!
