WOT Limp
Changed my plugs to the New NGK plugs at 70k and still getting limp mode at WOT at 120+ mph. Car pulls strong but as soon as i back off the gas car goes into limp mode. Checked for codes and no codes found with the JB4. When I shut car off and turn back on limp mode goes away and car runs fine. I can do only one strong WOT pull then limp mode. Any ideas?

It would be near impossible for your car to enter limp mode with no codes being thrown. Have you got auto clear turned on on your JB4?

Are you talking about the intake and exhaust VANOS Solenoids? How do you clean them? Might be a DIY out there

It says to clean them with compressed air? Also should I swap them? Intake to exhaust and exhaust to intake?

If cleaning them does not work (it didn't for me) you'll have to replace them. I'm 99.99% sure they VANOS solenoids are causing your issue. Your symptoms were exactly on point with mine when my solenoids failed. Very easy to swap them out, parts shouldn't cost you more than $300, give or take.

TBH here is what you need to do. Remove the solenoid and inspect it. If it had gunk and build up on, then clean it (I used brake cleaner) so use that and compressed air. Do that to them both. BUT If you pull out the solenoids and they look to be pretty clean or normal, then it's an internal issue, like mine. I wouldn't even waste time putting it back, I'd go and buy 2 new ones right away and put them in. Trust me, limp mode is the most annoying thing in the world, my life has improved ever since I've changed my solenoids, lmao .

Anyways, you can buy OEM stuff on eBay and save some cash. The way I did it was I used a shop that I knew of that had the BMW dealer discount and saved I think it's like 20 or 30% off...I paid $220.00 for both VANOS solenoids.

Well lastnight I took out both of the VANOS solenoids and cleaned them with brake cleaner and compressed air and put them both back in there original locations. Both of the solenoids looked clean no gunk or buildup on them. Test drove the car it feels more responsive. Did a few hard pulls from 30, and 40 MPH to 100 MPH and no limp mode. But when I did a few high speed runs to 120 and 130 MPH and backed off the gas the car went into limp mode again. Once again no codes and car runs fine and builds boost all the way to 120 and 130 MPH this only happens on high speed runs which I do once in a blue moon. I don't want to replace both solenoids and the limp mode doesn't go away. Not sure what else to do....??

You MUST have codes. Tuners can't read all the codes though so you may have shadow codes that can only be read by true BMW diagnostic tools. No sense in us guessing unless you just want to blindly start spending money. Could be any of the following: Coil Packs Vanos Solenoids Injectors Fuel Pumps Carbon Build Up Intake Valves |

I cleaned my vanos solenoids and swapped them...no issues. They are the same part number for both.

so I increased the "boost fail safe" on the jb4 settings from 17 to 18.5 and the limp has gone away when I was in map 1...will have to continue to monitor see if it comes back
