You need a Diesel. But good to know you are probably one of the few to put that many miles on a 335.. Write Bmw NA when you make it 300K..you might get a gift..

I am 400 miles away from 100k and replacing my water pump and thermostat this weekend. I have been paranoid about failure since about 60k and everyone I talk to has had it fail way before 100k. Your 172k on the pump makes me think I am wasting my money. Anyway, it is a DIY and the cost is $450 total. I've wasted money on worse and I will feel better about taking long trips which are fantastic in the 335i.

There is a DIY somewhere which I followed but basically I took the intake mani off, found which cylinders had valves closed and filled them up with carb cleaner, let sit, scrub off with gun brushes and wire brushes, suck out with shop-vac. Then just turn the crankshaft to move valves and close the other cylinders, repeat for them. It's very easy to do but it does take a few hours. |

Very refreshing to see this. Also 172k for original water pump? Must be a record.

There is no reason we should be replacing water pumps like we are but I think the conditions you have are the main reason. I don't drive short distances and never in salt or cold weather but I keep a new pump and tstat in my trunk.
I have the OFHG leak and the trans leak both which will be addressed soon. I think your OCI of 5K is key to not getting an overwhelming build up of carbon on the intake valves. I sold my M3 last year with 284K miles to a friend with everything running just fine to include every switch and control... I do all my own work but was planning to have the valves done with the OFHG but thinking I might just do those myself now. Congrats on the miles!!!! |
