Hey guys, would appreciate it so much if some of you wiser gentlemen would give me some advice/tips. Over these past few weeks the subject of school has been reluctantly stained in my mind, i am 20 years old. Work 2 decent part time jobs and currently still paying off my car.
I would love to go back to school to pursue a higher education. Obviously because i'm asian and a degree is a must, and also because i'd like a stable life. So the current problem is which major i should pursue and which major will have a better chance at landing you a job. (I've read so many horror stories of college grads who are unable to find a job and work for min wage just to pay off their student loans)<-- whats the point of a degree?
Back to topic, I dont need to be rich, i'd just like a career where i can support my future family and kids (50k+?). My main choices right now are education,computer science and business management/marketing.

Reasons for each option..

Teacher
Pros:lots of days off.. summer, holidays..etc.etc. Very stable imo, probably alot easier to graduate from since its not very intensive in a specific field. Sister is also a teacher so she could teach me the ropes. Could balance work/life better
Cons:rude students.. hard to find a teaching job without experience if i was right out of college?

Computer science/ IT
Pros:high paying...alot more opportunities...interesting projects..alot more versatile
Cons: Immensely harder to graduate from, been doing research and most places wont hire without 3+years of experience. I guess that's where the internship comes in.

Business Management
Pros: well my parents own 2 local restaurants so this is my fallback. Could manage some retail stores at the mall? Haven't don't much research in this field so if some of you guys could fill in the blanks haha.
More job opportunities? not too sure
Cons:Once again, experience

So all in all, I'd just like to know which majors have a higher chance of landing a job after graduating, more stability. What did you guys major in and what did you love about your major and what did you regret or wish you could have done?

Teachers have a lot of time off but they also don't make as much but from my hawaiian travels, it appears that the financials are not as much of a focus (rightfully so). Software developers are in demand at the moment but that can always change. Management is fine but you're better off specializing a little bit. If you're going to take over a family business, finance may be your best bet. Every company has a finance department and you'll have to take management courses along the way as a part of the business core at most universities.

I went the finance route and have worked in the field for a decade. That being said, I might also consider trading that to live in Hawaii and get to spend more time with my kids while teaching.

Life on the mainland is drastically different from life on the islands so much of the advice you'll likely get will be skewed.

The computer science degree is always a good way to go, but I'm not sure what the opportunities are over in Hawaii though. You can (somewhat) combine the business management degree with that and go for a Management of Information Systems (MIS) degree. It can allow you to go either way.

A lot of people will ask "Well, what do you want to do?", and I found out you kind of figure that out along the way. I started out going for software engineering and ended up with an MIS degree.

Exactly what I did. I graduate in the fall. Business Technology Administration at UMBC.

i was was going for a supply chain management degree, now going for MIS right now. you are right how its like business management degree. i took lot of classes that could go into either degree.

X-ray/Ultrasound/CT/MRI Tech
Registered Nurse
EMT
ETC..

Fair job market, good pay/benefits, some positions only require AD or BS, and room for growth (specifically RNs making the transition to Nurse Practitioners, Professors, Directors of Nursing, Informatics, etc etc)

Yes I've considered it. The only thing holding me back from joining a nursing program is the amount of people doing it, the competition to be a nurse down here in hawaii is pretty stiff. But I guess that goes for most careers

What about the programs beyond ordinary nursing? CRNA for example?

I have an Associates in Aircraft Maintenance Technology, and working on finishing up my Airframe & Power plant license. Mostly due to my work in the Air Force.

My personal goal is to get into telecommunications field, and go from the Air Force to what is left of NASA. Yeah, didn't see that bomb falling when I made that plan while still in high school... But, im still plugging for the transition in 5 years when I retire.

Even if not NASA, just about EVERY region of the Gov, and major corporations has use of satellite communications and space systems these days. The field will always be growing either via Gov industry or private interest. As long as you keep up on the new tech, you will always be working on cool shit.

Advice? Degrees and certifications are very important, but it's all about networking and politics if you want to move up.

- physicians assistant
- engineering, but not civil engineering

Can't go wrong with that if you want to work in business.
