Will the M235i be faster than the 1-series M?
In a straight line or around a track? Top Gear just tested the M135i, which has slightly less power, weighs roughly the same, and comes standard with RFTs. It did fairly well. I remember BMW saying the M235i would be faster around a track than the 1-series M.

First of: RFT tires for M135i? You sure about that? Most cars in Euro markets are with normal Michelin PSS.
Second, 1M time is 'damp' unlike M135i and Alfa 4C times which are 'dry'. Top Gear suggests 2 seconds should be subtracted from 'damp' times to give an adjusted time for a probable dry lap which would take the 1M lap to a 1.23. Stig is the same. So, 1M is/was around 2.1 seconds quicker on this short track with same driver according to their own suggestions and if the M135i was with normal PSS then this difference is even more respectable due to lower wet performance of (1M's older) PS2 tires. Though I could believe that on another track which favors high speed stability like the Ring the M235i could manage better times than a 1M, this thread seems a bit counter-effective imho. On Top Gear track 1M remains to be quickest BMW ever tested including E90 M3 and F10 M5. It suits particularly well to that track like it did for Hockenheim Short too. So, answering OP's original question: Yes and No, depends on track and other stuff.
