Engine noise after gasket replacements
Hi all.
We replaced both he oil filter housing and cooler seal gaskets today, as well as doing a spark plug change. Got everything back together, started her up, and this lovely sound ensued... This one, we revved the engine a bit to see if it slacked off... not exactly. We did leave the under tray off (doing control arm bushings next weekend and it'll save some time) and I've heard others say that can make it noisier, but this noise doesn't seem right. First BMW I've owned (SVT Focus and a mistake of a Mercedes before this), so we have NO experience with the brand- other than the heavy lurking and reading I've been doing here- but the Boyfriend knows his way around the garage, so we didn't think this would be a difficult DIY at all. We put the cover back on as well, and seems to have quieted it. I'm going to feel like a real daft girl if that's all it was. It just doesn't seem quite... right. Thoughts? Suggestions? Glass of wine? Last edited by MariahByrd; 03-22-2014 at 04:41 PM.. |

Sounds normal with cover off, cowl off and hood up....you're probably just overly cautious and paranoid. Welcome to the club! Injectors are noisy on these engines.

Did you flush coolant and do the reset mode?

We didn't flush the coolant- reason being is the gaskets were intact. Was under the impression (perhaps INCORRECTLY) that a flush was needed to make sure there were no pieces of gasket in the system. Is that the purpose of it? Or does it need to be done PERIOD?
Didn't reset- looking up now to do. ETA: I did that when I bought the car; wasn't sure you meant what I was thinking. Will go do that (again) now. |

Ha- me? Paranoid? It's like you know me already. I'm a 'better safe than sorry' kind of girl... sometimes it's needless but that one time it might not be ha ha.

Edited post too late- I did it when I bought it, and wasn't sure if you meant the one I was thinking of. Going to do right now. Is the flush indeed a precautionary measure to avoid gasket pieces in the system? We can do a flush... that'll cost me a steak dinner for the Boyfriend and I think he wouldn't mind.

I'd just do the reset and top off coolant. Should be fine with that.

Sorry...should have referred to it as the bleed procedure.

Take it for a spin! I bet it is fine. These cars have a way of causing paranoia until you get out and mash the throttle and smile!
Good luck! |
