With speculators running up the price of a barrel of oil to the $100 range, there can be little doubt that the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline is headed for $3.50, and maybe even $4, before there's any sort of fallback.
While such price hikes will increase the pressure on new vehicle buyers to
look for more fuel-efficient vehicles, there's a real sticker shock awaiting those who need or want a big sport utility vehicle or pickup truck.

Those vehicles are among the thirstiest gas-guzzlers, delivering an average of 14 to16 miles per gallon in combined city-highway driving if a driver is judicious with the gas pedal.

The real shock for drivers of these automobiles will come when the tank approaches empty and it's time to fill up. Because they burn a lot of fuel, these vehicles have larger gas tanks, which can mean that the final total on the gas pump can be frightening.

How frightening? How about $100 per fill-up?

At $3.50 a gallon, getting change from a Ben Franklin is not likely to happen very often. And on some vehicles, it will cost more than $100 to fill up.

Of course, as the price of gasoline rises, owners of more economical vehicles like the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry will also get wallet shock. Both cars come with 18.5-gallon gas tanks that would cost $64.75 for a fill-up.

We all need to drive, and while the ultimate measure of economy is the number of miles that can be squeezed from a gallon of fuel, it's worth considering what you're likely to be spending when that tank runs dry and to factor it into your budget.

This chick I work with got a 2007 F350. She told me today that her husband spends almost a grand on gas a month.. With that much driving, I would rather roll a hybrid.

Something that big is not even worth it even if you have money..

I laugh at these threads. i have always, and will ALWAYS be paying 1.42US for a gallon of premium 97 gas. Thanks BP, BG, Baroid, NP, and all the other oil/gas companies that are here raping my country for oil.

The sooner gas hit 5 dollar a gallon the better. I have no problem with gas going up, there are far to many commuters that clog the freeways and cause massive traffic problems for local residence. It's time they start to pay for the problems they cause.

In the bay area people regularly commute 50+ miles to work and think nothing of it. I think that is a massive waste of fuel.... how about moving closer to work? fixes traffic problems and saves energy.

My dad works in Saudi Arabia...when you do the conversion gas ends up being 25 CENTS a gallon over there ....lol...we get raped here but I hear it's much worse in England/Europe

I don't think problems will be fixed quite that easy.

Commuters will still commute. More than likely they'll just trade in their cars for something more fuel efficient while they pay $5.00/gal.

Based on the way things have been going, premium gas will be at $5.00/gal. by summer 2010.

Actually if people move closer to work it will significantly help traffic, I agree that higher gas prices will only inconvenience commuters in the short term, but I have no problem with doing everything possible to make commuting cost as much as possible. The sooner moving away from work is more expensive than moving closer we can start some real change.
