Wheeler dealers question
Any of our mates from the UK know how long that show has been on for? My colleagues and I were just wondering.

It premiered in 2003. But the way you chaps in the states broadcast it is odd. For example, I saw a advert on the telly stating New Season was set to air, meanwhile it was actually much earlier season of the program. I guess since the show was a late arrival to the states, the rebroadcasts are all jumbled up.

I think they been at for longer then 10 years, the reason I said they they showed on of the very first cars they did and they both look 20's old. Maybe they did not age well.
At first I did not like the show, but it grew on me, I think they do a nice job of explaining how to go about fixing things and how things work. I just love how the Brits negotiate. |

Kinda don't like that show.
I find it wrong when they don't factor in what labor would be to rebuild a 1964 transmission or the like. Factor that in and their budgets are blown every time. I like the mechanic more than the main guy

They would have to refurbish like four cars a week in order for the business model to work, given the crazy low margins they're getting.

^ I have to agree, and the only show on TV which I believe the guy is not using show money to pay his bill is Rick's Restorations. First I am not sure why people would pay him that much to repair the things they restore. But I think his prices are high for some of the work he does.
It is obviously these two guys make their money doing basic car repairs, the buy , fix and sell is just for the show and the money they make on the show covers the other costs. As a person who has done 3 total restoration on cars and about to do a 4th, you barely cover your material cost let alone your own labor. Now if you are paying someone to due the work forget about making a profit, you better just love that car and never plan to make your money back. I am about to do my 1953 F-100 which was one of the 3 cars I did in the past. This time I going all in and doing a complete redesign of all the mechanical and I am going to be putting at least $35K in part not counting the 1000's of hours of work. I already know I will never make any of that back, but this is for me not to be sold. Last edited by Maestro; 04-04-2014 at 04:47 PM.. |

They also own a used car dealer if I remember correctly, which is probably where they make the majority of their money. May have gotten their start with something like this though.

I've always liked the show because I like seeing what Ed can do and have picked up some pointers from him as well. What I find to be a little mind boggling are how inexpensive cars are in the UK used car market compared to here in the US.
They had another show called Mike's Motors which had customers coming in to look at three similar used cars at their dealership. Ed's part on this show was showing people how to do a little work on their cars in order to add value when selling privately. I'm not sure if this show is still on the air.
