What engine would YOU want in an M2?
We all know about the 4-cylinder talk and someone posted information saying it will be powered by an N55 (link). All rumors aside, I'm interested in seeing what kind of engines you guys would like to see. Be realistic, please.
I'll start, I would love to see an old school ///M motor. An N/A straight 6... 3.6 Liters 8500 RPM redline Direct Injection 380 HP & 315 lb.ft |

Detuned S55.
As long is it's not a 4 cylinder I'd be happy though.

I think it's pretty much a safe bet that any new BMW motor will be FI. They aren't going back to NA. If they detune what they have in the new M3, that would be awesome. Maybe 340-370hp.

The M3 or M4 engine fits. Why not use it.

i actually want to see a Turbo inline 4 around 370 hp in the m2. Every other competitor has released or is planning to release a powerful 4 pot. Downsizing is the future, BMW will have to have a powerful 4 Pot anyways, better to make a statement by releasing one with the m2

Just looking for a little creativity. Also, that would mean there would only be 2 engines for the whole ///M lineup. The BiTurbo V8 and the BiTurbo I6

I'm more concerned about the weight rather than the engine. BMW will not disappoint with the engine. They constantly win awards for their engines. But they do have a bad history when weight is concerned. They better make it 3,199 lbs or less. With 360-375HP and a 50/50 weight distribution it would be a home run. A nice wide body from factory like the E30 has would not hurt either

Detuned M3/M4 engine S55.
N55 is great in my M135i and the N54 in my 1M was great too but a bespoke M engine would be the nuts. M do not have the "there was no time (budget) to develop one" card to play this time around. |

S55 over a tweaked N55 any day. The only reason (other than maybe cost) to use the N55 would be to avoid stepping on the M3/4 toes. N/A would be nice, but isn't going to happen.
At the end of the day, though, it doesn't really matter what the engine looks like as long as it performs. What I want is great throttle response and even power delivery. Ideally, it would have a flat torque band all the way to redline rather than the usual tapering torque band of production turbo engines. |

A reworked version of the current N55 will be just fine by me. Given how Porsche is moving to a smaller FI 2.0+ liter in their Cayman/Boxster come 2016, I think BMW will be look at that as a comparison. Leaving the M3/M4 with the 6 cylinder they might go with a 2.3 liter FI engine for the M1/M2 series. That is if they ever decide to do a hatchback version and call it a 1 series.

Its possible. The e30 M3 used a 4 cylinder while e30 325i used i6. The 4 cylinder produced much more power too.

The S55 would scream but I believe that the M division can bring the best out of a modified N55. I'd like to see a twin turbo rather than a twin scroll single turbo. I have no interest in a 4 cylinder.

The 4.6L, 608 hp motor from the 918. The best part? It weighs 130 lbs less than an N55 before you chop two cylinders off... Call it 3.4 liters, 450 hp, and 180 lbs saved off the nose- you can keep the torque. Oh wait, that's right, the guy who knew how to make normally aspirated motors left BMW for Stuttgart. Another budget turbocharged brick it is, then... Mezger. Come back after your lump has won Le Mans 14 times and we can discuss.

If the M2 came with lots of cfrp and went on a serious diet, the N55 over the nose would make it hard to keep the 50/50 weight ratio. I would think a 4 cylinder would be ideal for a balanced chassis.

BMW currently sells a high revving, lightweight, 1.46 hp per pound, 193 hp normally aspirated motor for $15k. It comes with titanium intake and exhaust valves, gun drilled cams, etc. And a complete motorcycle.
