Question. What are you second cars or is the BMW your only car? I need advice
Hi,
So i have an e92, not the most practical car but fun. Im only 19 so i dont have any real responsibilities, family. etc. However, I dont like driving the BMW every day, i think it is pretty bad in bad weather, and i dont like driving it certain places and I think it draws too much attention at certain times (ie. cops) So i'm thinking of getting a second car, i wanted to see how many ppl use ur bmw as their only car, the RWDs at that, (do you guys use snow tires, change to better all season tires, or not drive it) again i have an e92 328i with sport package. And for those of you that have a second car what do you guys drive, I dont have BMW money to get like an e90 328xi, the e92 was a gift and I kind of want to pay for this car by myself so I've been looking at like either FWD or AWD sedans under like $25k, dont flame me for saying this but i kinda like the civic si sedan, its a decent car, decent price and practical, what do you guys think? So please help me out I'm not quite sure what I should do. And i live in New England where it snows a fair amount. Thanks in advance |

Get a Geo Prism for like $2500 for a daily driver. They're the most underrated beaters of all time. They're the exact same thing as a Corolla, but have Geo badges on it so it depreciated like hell.
This is my only car but I may considering picking up another car since I have a 90 mile commute each day... Although I think it's kinda dumb to buy a car and not drive it, maybe it's better to commute in a beater car as long as it's not such a POS that I'll die in it in the event of a car crash.

Get a Subaru, WRX or Legacy depending on your style. Roughly 25k, AWD, good performance, great safety and great reliability. I've owned one for the last 6 years, never any real problems with them. They just always work. Plus they get around great in bad weather.

I have an E46 too, heavily modded. I have a Honda Odyssey Touring and a Honda CR-V LX too. The E46 is a fun secondary car.

At 19 I may have had a bike, but I sure as hell didn't have a BMW!! Now, at the tender age of 63, I keep the E92 as my garage queen driven on nice days only, drive our Endeavor SUV for inclement weather and work, and we use my wife's Mercedes CLK 320 convertible for warm sunny days. I'd recommend anything with 4WD if you can't borrow you Mom's (per above recommendation). Enjoy!

my bmw is the second car i've owned in my life. my first was a 97 accord which i received back in 1997. I use the accord as my commuter to work and my e92 for the weekends. For me it's not b/c of the weather condition, but the miles put on the car.

I say you should go for something other than a sedan, like a van or truck. Roadster would be even less practical than the e92 so don't go there. |

I'm 23 and I'm in law school, and that is important for the following reason: I have a Ducati and the e92. I live in a renovated condo down by the courthouse, and the office I work at is right next to the court house, so I ride my bike to school and back, then just walk to work, and take my car out on weekends. Plus I get badass points for being the only law student with a motorcycle :-)

I'm 22 and a grad student. I drive my e90 335i everyday. Then again, we don't see much snow in the Bay Area. Had a VW Touareg as an undergrad. Great SUV for the price, and never had problems in snow at Tahoe.

Enjoy your car and drive it...why get another car. I live in Boston, MA and I have a E92 335i, just put on some snow tires and take it easy in the snow. How many times a year does it snow so hard that you wont be able to get around? 1? 2? 3? Not worth getting another car. Sorry, but I've have many many conversations about this. If you had an F50, that's another story...

yah if it is bad enough outside where you can't get around in your car with snow tires......then its probably bad enough to the point where you shouldn't be driving at all....
and if you really wanna get crazy I think bmw sells snow chains |

I drive my E92 everyday, it's no problem here in CA. I agree that borrowing mom's car is a good idea, you can save your bucks for something else in the future, you have a nice car already.

I have a 99 Lexus Rx300 . I would say get a used Audi A4 either the 2.0T or older 1.8T quattro models. They are good on gas, great in foul weather, the used ones are pretty close to the 25K mark you mentioned and they look pretty nice. Also the performance isnt bad either with the turbos, but if you have to get a new car then get something like a subaru which was already talked about up there. Perhaps a base altima or a better equipped sentra.

if you must get another car, this is hte one i'd suggest too. 02-03 bug eye versions were notorious for having a weak transmission, so you could go 04 and up. Since you do have 25k, you could get a used 04-05 STi

Right now my E90 is my only car. Though I'm in the process of replacing that with an M3 and something cheap as a daily driver.
I probably wouldn't spend 25k on a 2nd car. Then again, you said the E92 was a gift, so I'm assuming you don't have money tied up in that. I second the comments on a used WRX or E46. Also, what about a used X3? If you want new, go with a Civic (I'd pass on the si) or something that cost no more then $20k and pay cash.

Drive your mom's car until it doesn't work anymore. Heck, when I just had a 'lude and i came home from school, i'd park it, cover it, and drive mom's car. Granted, she had two cars, but you get the point.
Get a second car that you don't mind driving though. I like the touareg in my sig pick because its not too big and its got a nice fuel-thirsty engine, and I already have a more nimble, faster car in the driveway. However, I could just as much go for something like a mazdaspeed 3 or the new rumorored-turbocharged next gen TSX. Anything FWD/AWD should suffice. My mantra is... if I can't get over it in a fwd car, I don't want to be in it period.
