CA Speeding Ticket - NJ Resident
Hi all,
I'm in Los Angeles, CA for the long weekend and unfortunately received a speeding ticket (22350 VC) in my rental yesterday for going 63 in a 45. I was coming down a steep hill (Hawthorne Blvd, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) and talking to my wife and just wasn't concentrating on my speed. My questions are: (1) How much is this ticket? I can't find any clear fine schedule, and the police officer was not of much help. The one thing he did say was it depends on if I have previous ticket in CA, which I don't. (2) Does this ticket carry points that will transfer to NJ, and ultimately raise my insurance. If so, is there anything I can do, e.g., online driving school, so that CA does not report the ticket to DMV? Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You should receive a summons in the mail in about 30 to 45 days. That will tell you your options.

1. They don't put the fine on the tickets. You'll get that in the mail with your options.
2. Not sure if the point transfers over to your NJ license but it looks like you don't have a CA ticket anyway, so you'll get offered traffic school. You're allowed to do it online. I've used these guys before: http://www.besttrafficschool.com/ The final exam is a cakewalk, that's if it hasn't changed since the last time I've used it. 3-5+ years ago. Since you live in NJ, I'd suggest you hire these guys to take care of your ticket for you: http://www.ticketclinic.com/index.html Between the wife and I, I've had to use them 3 times. 2 of them got dismissed and 1 of them, I had to pay the fine but didn't have to take traffic school. It's all about chances though. Here's the outcome of mine: 2 tickets, I just had to pay their fee, no court fines. The 3rd ticket, had to pay the court fine and their fee. Money well spent! Good luck. |

Not sure about other states but here in CA if your speed is more than 15 mph over the speed limit then your ticket cost more. It should be around $410
All traffic tickets go to the DMV and a ticket adds 1 point to your record. If you haven't had a ticket in the last 18 months then you can do traffic school and have that point removed. Smart idea if you don't want your insurance to raise.

It should be $17.00 per mile exceeded as far as i know and that was years ago. Probably its worth more now.

Speeding ticket fines are set by the county they are issued, there is no set fee for a speeding ticket across Ca.
Red light tickets, carpool tickets and others are set by statute/law. THat means a judge has no leeway in adjusting the fine. Speeding tickets, on the other hand can be adjusted by a judge. Anyway a cop won't know what the fine is. It's calculated when the ticked is submitted.
