When I did the customer exhaust system on my 228i, I unplugged the plug that connects to the valve. I've been driving the car like this for 2 weeks now with no check engine lights what so ever.

Turn off exhaust valve actuator
Just figured that out too.
I live in South Florida so any cold weather benefit to the closed valve is lost on me.

Only if you unplug it when the system is warm and now open. The left tailpipe valve is closed when cold and secondary air pump starts process, and heats things up then signals to open valve. Sound dies down a bit, and of course you are more green now.
Unplugging the connection does not throw code, and keeps valve open. It does not then close down when things cool off back there. It adds some depth to the sound...but not much on the PE. There is no golf tee remedy on this little rocket now. |

Unplugging the sensor does not do toooo much to the sound, but it does seems to add some burble depth...[zkeeper dictionary], but probably it's in the mind of me and me alone. It still will tone down, and at idle standing at rear of car its low sounding.
Start up IS nice indeed. 30-35 seconds later, down she comes. BUT now the driving sounds a bit deeper...as I said, probably in my mind and an engineer would just laugh at me, as some here might. It's all about warming exhaust emissions up and making sure we get all those terrible fossil gasses used and re-cycled as quickly as possible to keep our planet going for the next generation. |

I checked....not much we can do about secondary air pump, without which will throw more codes than a 6 year old with a new decoder ring. I found out it also would make air sensors go crazy indicating too lean a mix and throw more gas at engine.
Bottom line: not much can be done about current PE sound, unless one deletes it. Aftermarkets? Maybe, but the air pump still does what it does on start up with any rear system. MIGHT find a muffler that's really loud and then it tones down to what would be desired after warm up. Now there's a nice expensive gamble. |

Just want to throw it out there I run CG's valve control with my ER downpipe and the sound is definitely noticeable deeper and louder when accelerating 1-3RPM. This is from inside the car with windows closed. I'll have videos posted soon.

To bring this thread back to life, I just tried this out on my 228i and I love it. All I did was disconnect the connection to my muffler and now I get nice little burps when I let off the throttle at low rpms. The overall exhaust note is also a bit louder.

Is the difference anything like this? Is it as dramatic or an effect?

Just did this on my 2015 M235i with catless DP. I have to say I am a bit disappointed. I have a BMS intake as well. The turbo spool and hiss got louder and more pronounced in my opinion but I actually felt the exhaust was pretty dim in the cabin.
I'll play with it a bit more tomorrow, I'm wondering if this is due to the noise that is piped in through the speakers. Not 100% sure if disconnecting this influences that in anyway. Either way I had my stereo either off or at a very low volume while driving so who knows. No CEL though. Anyone else do this on an M235i? I also noticed the engine doesn't need to be warm, when I turn my car off the flap is locked open. Just my two cents. |
