Winter setup revisited
My question is whether the stock all season setup (18 x 7.5" wheels all around i.e. square setup with run flat tires) is good as a winter setup in the midatlantic/Philadelphia area??
Originally, I was intending to order the stock rims with the mixed summer tires as my performance set and then research a winter setup. However, the dealer is telling me they can't order the summer setup (see link below if you are interested) so I am entertaining the idea of using the stock all season setup as my winters and getting a summer setup as needed in the future.. Any suggestions or experience with this?? http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=995521 |

I can't speak to your climatic conditions, but having driven a lifetime on AS tires before getting a dedicated set of summer and winter tires on my F30, I can say that dedicated winter or summer tires are better than AS by an order of magnitude. Can you survive a winter without dedicated winter tires? Absolutely. But don't expect to transfer all the power and torque your car delivers with AS tires. You are paying for a performance car; Might as well get to enjoy that performance year round!
My first upgrade was to replace the stock AS run flats with Potenza RE11 for summer and Blizzak WS70 for winter; I think this was a very good investment and would do it again (actually, I wouldn't order AS tires the next time, but you catch my drift.). |

I'm sticking with the standard wheels w/ mixed summer tires... in looking for winter tires, I have no problem finding several options for the front (225/40 R18), but it's the rear (245/35 R18) that I can't seem to find any winters.
For those of you with the staggered wheels, what winter tires are you using??? |

not sure having a staggered setup for winter is really optimal. I wanted to do the same thing as I didn't like the wheels at first. But in real life they look a lot better. Going to look for cheaper wheels for winter.

Thanks for your feedback. I think I am ok with the all season setup. Some context, I have booked a date for delivery at BMW Welt mid August so when I finally get the car here stateside, it will be late September/early Oct hopefully and winter will be around the corner

Winter Tires
My daughters 2103 328Xdrive and my wifes X5 both have all season runflats Conti's on the 328 and Micelin's on the X5. Both stink in heavy snow. So if you are going to be in the D.C. area, you should be O.K. In the Northeast, dedicated snows i would think were a must. That's why i ordered the Pirellii's.just put some bags of sand in the trunk of the 235i and and away i go-hopefully.
