stone chip in the windshield
unbelievable...
wait for a week to drive my new car due to snow tires...finally got her on the road. on the way back from work on the 404, i heard a stone go PAK off my windshield, i was look geez, but everything looked ok in the evening. on the way to work this morning, i had this mark of dirt on my windshield that was so persistent that i could get it off. get to work, it's a freakin' chip on my windshield, about 4-5mm in length. man, my car only has 300kms on it. i spoke to my dealer and showed him the nice chip on my windshield, they recommend that i get it patched up but they won't do it. was wondering if anyone had some reputable recommendations? i think i'm cursed... |

I had two chips fixed by Ron. He works out of his home, but does very good work.
Ron Tordoff at 416-802-8772 or email at rstordoff@sympatico.ca He is available seven days a week Monday > Friday 9:00am > 8:00pm, Saturday 9:00am > 6:00pm Sundays 10:00am > 4:00pm Not sure where you live, but he is located in Scarborough, around Port Union and 401.

i was wondering if anyone had their windshield repaired (not replaced) and had it covered under their comprehensive policy within automobile insurance. i called my insurance company and they told me that it would be repaired at no cost and no deductible (full reimbursement) and that it will not affect my premiums or classification as it is at no fault. although, i didn't trust them, i called them again and i got a conflicting response saying that my deductible would be applied!??!!?
geez, i don't really care for the cost of the repair, however, if it could be covered without penalty under my insurance policy then i would be stupid not to use it. i just don't want to do anything irreversible and have my insurance affected in the future for such a minor repair. so, i was wondering if anyone had any experience or comments on such a situation. i really wish the insurance company would keep their house clean and have some consistent answers to something so simple. i feel like i'm making a claim without being full-informed of the advantages and disadvantages of my action. thanks everyone. |

Go to speedy auto glass or something. It is $30 to get the chip filled.
In Alberta, we get this all the time. My 330 got a big chip and a crack the day I picked it up! BMW glass is cheap junk. I bought my M3 in Chicago and drove it back. Looked like new glass. Drive it to the mountains and I have a chip. My STi... still no chips (small cracks). Only pitting. BMW glass is CHEAP. That being said. Since your car was new, it doesn't matter what you do to your glass if you have coverage since day 1. Any damage (even if the filler damages your glass) should be covered... No?

Depends on the insurance. Mine - Personal - does this for free (no deductible), and not affecting premium.
I like AppleAutoGlass - they do a VERY good job. They fixed 5 or 6 chips on my windshield just in this year, and most of this fixed chips are not even noticeable. Don't wait too long. This chip could very soon become a crack, and then you will HAVE to replace the whole glass. Meanwhile, until you fix it - do NOT turn on windshield defrost mode when hot air goes to the front glass. |

Yeah, if you want it to crack, go from -10 outside to a parking garage that is +20 inside. You will lovely spider cracks forming.

Get that addressed asap, and don't claim it - just pay the thirty or
forty bucks. Never get insurance involved until you REALLY need them.

damn, i just got raped. i took it to a bmw dealership downtown as they were the closest and i figured bmw should be able to fix bmw glass well. the fix was good, too bad they didn't clean the windshield after, left a nice suction cup mark...best part was they took me for 100 bones. next time, going to goto apple auto glass. on the bright side, they wash my car...now i have to deal with some swirl marks.

I just got a pair of minor 2-3 mm chips in my windshield uurrrghh. I didn't even notice them at first, they're so small. Pisses me off, especially since I only drive on the highway about 10% of the time.
I'm hoping it can be fixed, not replaced. Has anyone had their windshield repaired recently? Any shop recommendations in the GTA (downtown preferred)? TIA

It happened to me in the X3 twice, and recently i got a very small chip in the E90. I went to Canadian Tire 1st time at Weston & 401, there is a tent in the parking lot; the guy did a good job repairing it. 2nd time in a Canadian Tire in St Clair & Keele. Both good experiences, the guys know what to do and repair the glass in +- 20 min and way less than 100.

I got a stone chip the first week I got my car and on Hwy7 even! Not even talking about high speed, just 80km/hr and a freakin stone chip. Grrrr. Even after repair you can still notice it if you look. It gets annoying if you know it's there, right on the driver side in front of you
Anyway, I brought it to this guy in Port Union (Ron Thordoff I think) to fill up the crack so it won't spread. Quote:

usually depends on the insurance company you are with...some will actually pay for them as they say it has weakened the structure/integrity of the windshield if it has cracks and such
