You'll need a way to get light in the work area. Being able to see makes it a lot easier.

I am a firm believer that swearing is required to make a job go well. Many years ago we had a small office over the garage where my then-high school daughter was doing homework. I was trying to install a new Borla exhaust underneath a 1996 Impala SS and all the supposedly round pipe ends were oval, but with the ovals at 90 degrees to the ones they were supposed to fit. I was told later that my daughter called in my wife and said, "Mom, you should hear what Dad is saying down there". They listened a while and had a good laugh. I had to apologize to her and explain my first sentence above, noting it should only be when no one else is is listening. --Bob

Sounds like the C word was put to good use there.

Just for the hell of it, I texted my trusty SA and asked her how much she would charge me. She said for you, $200-$250. The OEM filters are $100+ cheapest online, so that is about an hour labor. Tempting. Pretty sure these $25 FCP filters are made by the same company that makes the BMW ones.

these things are the biggest pain in the ass but I'll never pay 200-300 for the dealer to do it...

I’m going to drop off my annual bottle of Christmas wine for my SA, I think I will ask her to do them while we shoot the shit. I’m guessing I’ll be under $200 with the gift wine😉.

Given how handy you are and you used the word “bitch” to install, I think I’ll have the dealer install them.

Haha, close though, I got an MRI yesterday.

The filters came Saturday. I just haven’t had it in me to tackle it. Maybe next weekend. The good news is they can’t get any worse.
Any sign of brain function? :D

I hate MRIs. That machine is like being inside a mine ball mill. So loud!

First one I’ve ever had. It was for a sore hammy/hip so they didn’t need to put me all the way in, just waist down, so I was only half baked. I actually slept through it. Results came back negative which pretty much says deal with it you’re old.

Well, I will be hanging onto my FCP filters. I would have to pay for return shipping and I already paid for shipping to me, so not worth returning for a $25 product.

Now given they will be on hand, you never know if I am bored and looking for aggravation this weekend.

I had one on my shoulder so I was all the way in. I'm claustrophobic and that was the 2nd worst experience of my life (the 1st being waking up from my CABG with a tube down my throat and (in my mind) not being able to breathe!)! After all that, the results were inconclusive and the surgeon said I needed anything from a simple cleanup to rotator cuff surgery. Turns out I needed the later.

Woof. That sounds awful. My wife needs more meds for an mri than she did for her lasik surgery. She’s claustrophobic as well.

You’d have to fully sedate me to carve on my eyes. MRIs are annoying, though the shoulder one was painful because it took 45 minutes or longer iirc. Ugh.

They gave a valium and a half when I had my Lasik done. I remember the Dr telling me that when they start the procedure I might "go blind." She then told me to focus on the red dot. Instantly this bright, red, focused dot turned into a big, red blur! I remember thinking that this should really bother me, but it didn't! :D

I can pretty much guarantee you that these filters are a cheap Chinese fake, and not the genuine BMW part. As I pointed out in my post #32 of this thread the Chinese are copying even the packaging. If you want fake BMW filters you can order them on Aliexpress much cheaper than that eBay link. Even the auction link you posted avoids attesting that these are genuine. It only says the filter will fit.

I always joke that China can never actually take over as world #1 because they’re incapable of innovation. When all you can do is copy and steal from others, you’ll never be #1.

Or just pay $28 for the German ones FCP sells and skip the cheap fakes. I’m all for good deals but can’t bring myself to supporting cheap knockoffs from China.

Look guys, cabin air filters are not a "critical" maintenance item on any car, even a BMW. If you took your car to the dealership and they put these filters in your car and charged you $400, would you know the difference? I'm not saying that you should support knockoffs from China, but good grief, there are way more cost-effective options than what your dealership wants to sell you. There is no way ANY cabin filter is worth what BMW wants for them. If you feel otherwise, it's your money and your car, so do what you want.

Edit: This is a good read for those that are concerned about the quality differences in BMW vs. other brand filters: https://eeuroparts.com/blog/bmw-e46-cabin-air-filter-comparison/

Actually, pretty much he same with the Japanese; miniaturize and improve upon, but no real innovation.

Not so sure about that. I'm in Japan as we speak and some of the stuff they have here is nothing like any other country in the world (I have traveled across pretty much all the continents). There is plenty of unique innovation to be seen here. Have you visited Japan in the past decade or so?
