You beat me to it! I was just going to post a link to say that I've posted photos of the standard LED headlights that are fitted to my car.

I've driven twice now in pitch black conditions on country lanes, and I have to say the headlights are really good. That said, this is the first car I've owned that has LED headlights, so I suppose any kind of LED headlight is going to be an improvement over halogen to me.

I do like the way the DRL switches off on the side of an active indicator - I think it makes the indicator more obvious to other drivers as it is not obscured by an adjacent bright white light like some other cars.

I just ordered mine. I had a very restricted budget and wasn’t able to pick the adaptive headlight.
The car looks totally different without :-(

Could I let them installed afterwards?

Anything is possible with enough money. You’ll likely run into issues though coding the headlights to work properly with the car.

It didn’t look like an expensive option, around 800euros, but only had 600euro I could spend. But it seems like I would need to spend some couple of thousand euros to retrofit it afterwards :-/

You can always call your dealer and change the headlights before its on status 112.

"I’ve been driving the BMW iX1 for a while and noticed that the inner part of the rear lights doesn’t glow. When I inquired with the dealer, they mentioned that the inner lights will only illuminate if the car is equipped with adaptive headlights. I found it hard to believe that BMW would link the rear light functionality to the adaptive headlights package. This information wasn’t available online at the time of my purchase. Could someone confirm if this is how it works? could you provide links to the official website where it’s stated that the inner rear lights are part of the adaptive headlights package?"

If you look at the configurator (spin the car round so you can see the rear) this will confirm what your dealer told you. You can see the lights change depending on the options you’ve chosen. Just flip the tech pack on and off.

I didn’t know that! Of course I had to check online. It makes quite a big difference….also viewing from the side.

I feel “slightly” better now about the €2300 that the Technology Pack is costing on my new order.

However I’m a bit disappointed to learn that the adaptive headlights don’t change direction with the steering wheel. I have that on my G20 and was assuming I’d have it again.

Oh yes, I hadn’t realised that it also affects the lights round the side at the back.

It’s really bonkers that this is tied in with adaptive headlights. It just seems really mean.

Do they not? I haven’t driven much a night since getting my car and hadn’t noticed. My M135 had it, and they were great.

According to the post #34 on page 2 of this thread.

If this is true I wonder what is meant by “adaptive” in the case of the X1 as high beam assist is a separate feature …..which I’ll be switching off.

Adaptive means it uses full beam even with oncoming traffic, but switches off LEDs on the matrix to punch a dark hole in the beam so you don’t blind the approaching driver.

Thanks ….so what confuses me is why BMW also specifies high beam assist on the X1. Why do you need both?

Adaptive Headlights on my G20 still blinded approaching drivers unless I manually dipped the headlights.

Here’s the BMW X1 definition of Adaptive Headlights from the configurator. I wonder does the first sentence apply to the scenario described in the rest of the paragraph or does it mean something else?

“The Adaptive LED headlights adapt automatically to your driving situation. For maximum range of vision, the headlights detect oncoming traffic as well as vehicles in front and automatically fades them out of the high-beam headlight. Includes High-Beam Assistant”.

And for HBA it says…”High-beam Assistant automatically switches on and off of the high-beam headlights depending on the traffic situation, meaning you can concentrate fully on the road ahead”.

The adaptative headlights on the X1 are truly matrix headlights. It’s not just a high beam assist function.

While driving in the darkness, the matrix function is very noticeable.

I have a BMW F31 with LED and HBA and I can say that X1 adaptive headlights are much better.

HBA switches from main beam to dipped in built up areas, at junctions, and similar. Adaptive and HBA are different but complimentary.

Also if you have HBA but not Adaptive then it switches to dipped with oncoming traffic. But it’s hard to spec HBA without Adaptive in most markets because of the pack bundles.

That’s encouraging. I also drive a VW Taigo (in Portugal coincidentally) which has the IQ lighting system. The equivalent of what we generically call matrix headlights. The constant on off from the various multiple elements of the high beam is frustratingly distracting so much so that I find it less safe than the simple on off system of old.

Plus it’s slow to react to certain lights and ends up blinding some oncoming drivers. It’s also slow to revert to full beam after traffic has passed. I really hope the BMW system is better.

Ok I’ll just have to get used to it. I’m not a fan of giving up so much control to the car. I hope I can at least override HBA in the settings.
