Can someone please explain to me how do I open the rear doors without actually pressing the key a button on a key fob once or twice?
On my previous car (different make) - I will walk to the car carrying my daughter and just open the back door if the key is in my pocket.
Will I be able to do that on the X1 ( unfortunately no inventory near me so I can not test it my self)?
How do I lock the car after I take her from the back seat?
Do I have to press the button on the driver side or there is a button on the back seat door handles?
Thank you for your help!

For comfort access if equipped with the convenience package or higher, you just need to touch the inside of the handle of one of the front doors to unlock. To lock, you touch the outside of the door handles on the ridges surface. If you have digital key you can also use your phone in place of the fob for comfort access (with compatible phones with ultra wideband capabilities). You can also set the car to automatically lock and unlock as you move away or get close to the car, that’s how mine is setup.

I’ve created a shortcut for the proximity unlocking so I can disable it when I need to.

Thank you.
So there is no way to just touch the rear door handle and open the door or lock the car?
I have to reach the front door handle / unlock and then step back to the back door to open it. A little disappointing if that is the case.
Probably BMW wanted to save couple of dollars and not put a chip in the rear door handle.

My previous m235i gran coupe had all four doors with comfort access sensors. Grab back door handle and would unlock. This X1 does not have for some reason. I have to use fob or front door open then tap unlock button unfortunately. I have the walk away or toward setup to auto unlock or lock in proximity, but rears remain locked.

Most BMW’s I’ve had in the past were comfort access on front doors only, with the exception of the e60 5 series my friend has, that one is rear doors only. If it’s important to have the rear doors lock/unlock without touching or using the fob just enable the proximity locking feature. In the US if you order the convenience package it comes with both comfort access and digital key.

You can set it up so all doors unlock with comfort access.

There is. Activate digital key plus and proximity function. This way you won’t even have to touch any door handle to unlock/lock the car. You just have to approach the car to unlock and move away from it to lock

If you want to open doors with touch only then it only works on the front doors in the X1. Models further up the range comfort access works on all doors.

As mentioned above you can get the car to auto open / close via proximity. For us we haven't turned that off as the car was waking up and going to sleep too often in certain scenarios.

Yeah having the car open when you walk past it every time can be extremely annoying. It’s another bit of tech where most people will probably get bored of it quite quickly and revert back to just the normal use of their key opening and closing the car!

Depends on your living arrangements I suppose. I love the feature, but I live in a condo with no chance of it activating by accident. If you live in a home where the garage is in close proximity to where you pass by frequently I can see how that gets annoying. It would be nice if they let you tune the range of it activating, I know the wideband chips are able to determine how close you are to the car.

Yeah can see it’s ideal in those scenarios for sure but if you have your car parked in your street, drive, garden, and close to the house it’s essentially a gimmick that becomes annoying. I kept it on for a week and then got fed up with it. Part of my problem with all this tech that cars are now crammed with is that much of it is unnecessary and leads to the over complicated nature of owner’s experiences. Of course it can be turned off which is the solution I take to most of this stuff so not a major issue. I’m not a luddite, only just turned 50 but much of tech can be overkill or clever solutions for things that don’t actually need solutions ;)

For my day to day use, I have the car set up how I want it so it's not bother with my lifestyle, but I agree the tech can be somewhat overkill. I don't need the car to tell me there's a speed bump ahead of me, or to auto-park at a snails pace for me. But there are some things that are great, like the 360 camera and CarPlay. I'm actually on the verge of picking up a clean '03 ZHP as a play car to get more back to basics, as I missed driving manual.

Of course some of it is great, Carplay is 👌🏼

In the UK, the car unlocks as you walk up to it, and locks as you walk away from it. This works off my iPhone and the key. I have however turn the un-lock on approach as I walk passed the car a number of times a day and it really fired my head, always carrying my phone with me meant the car unlocked as soon as I walked past it.

If you walk past your car in the garage often then the walk away feature is quite annoying and thus has to be disabled. Shame because it’s very handy otherwise.

That you can disable the proximity unlocking but not the locking is solving most of my issues. Being able to just walk away from the car without having to do anything to lock it is

Program the settings for auto unlock as you approach the car and auto lock when you walk away.
