Hi everyone, i could't go for the premium package due to company budget limits, but i was wondering if it would be possible to retrofit the wireless charger to avoid cables around the cabin.

Is there anyone there that can find the part number to investigate if this would be possible and where would it connect? I imagine that the standard part can be replaced and it will connect to some standard harness...

please don't do it.... I have it and I rarely use it because it's not very good.

most people here agree that the BMW built-in wireless charger with the roller coaster bar is borderline junk for most phones. :(

find a nice wireless charger that you can mount somewhere in the car.

I agree with Spacesilver. I actually turned off the wireless charger function, and only use it to hold my phone in place. The seatbelt is cool as it keeps my phone from moving around, but the wireless charger itself is not great. In fact, I think it’s the main reason mtge battery health on my previous iPhone dropped 5% between July and November

it is totally not worth it. even if you have no case on your phone, it barely charges your phone - it essentially just keeps your charge at a steady %.

Another vote here for it being useless.

yeah, it doesn't even serve as a useful phone holder, it constantly wants to activate the BMW key on the wallet, and the screen will stay on because of the contact from the handle bar.

I really do dislike its placement and ability to charge, i notice i drain on battery even though it's charging while being used for carplay.

thanks a lot for the honest feedback, will focus on other improvements then :)

I disabled mine

you didn't mention if you had an iPhone or an Android phone. If it's an iPhone, I've seen someone stick a Magsafe charging pad in the same spot to charge his iPhone. Works 100 times better than the sorry BMW wireless charger. :) (edit: disable the BMW wireless charger first, of course)

it's an android, but i'll study the best solution when it arrives then.

I appreciate all the responses have been negative, so here is one that is positive - I have an Android phone, and whilst it is not a fast charger, I find it useful to use if my battery is low before a long drive home.

I just use a USB lead - the wireless charging is a waste of time. Only ever used it once and gave up on it... Get yourself a black lead you'll not even notice it.

I tried to add a MagSafe ring on the built in charger but the adhesive wasn’t strong enough as the charger as a indentation for the vents, there want enough surface area for the ring the stick to. I’ve just installed a MagSafe car mount on the vent and connected it by USB-C. Not the prettiest setup but does the job.

There’s a thread similar to this i just posted on. This is what my MagSafe phone holder and charger looks like.

Is the magnet strong enough to keep your phone in the case?

My OEM Apple MagSafe charger holds my iPhone 15 Pro Max just fine in my X1, and the Mophie MagSafe car charger works fine in my E46 on Turner coilovers.

If you buy a case with a MagSafe ring, couple that with a MagSafe wireless charger, then it’s very strong and will never fall off.

I’ve been using one of the vent mag chargers on my cars for a few years. The phone never falls off.

I’m really disappointed to read that the X1 wireless is junk. It’s literally one of the things I liked best about the car. I’ll find out in a couple weeks.

I used it driving back from DC to Philly using Waze. 2.5 hours, the phone lost about 12% of its charge. So it's not great (should charge UP not lose charge), but it's not as worthless as I thought.

But I'd still strongly recommend against paying to retrofit an OEM wireless charger.

The stock charger seems okay to me. Charges my android phone (without a case) while using Waze and streaming music. Battery % is higher at the end of a drive.

Would be cool if someone came up with a diy to retrofit a stronger charger in place of the integrated BMW one, without changing the look.

Echo what others have said. The charger works but is not a fast charger. I have a Samsung S23 in a genuine Samsung case and it gets hot when wirelessly charging in the car (but not when I charge by cable). I now use a short USB C wire to charge my phone in the car - charges quicker and doesn't overheat.

I've had good experience with mine on my android phone with case. Seems like it'll deliver about 1000 ma\hr. My car is late build 2023

I doubt you can retrofit the part as the system is switched on and off via the touch screen. Which probably means it also needs a software change to make the wiring active - if it's installed at all.... Fortunately there are good aftermarket chargers. Maybe use the power from the rear to hide the wire a bit?
