got a new iPhone 16 Pro Max. it keeps overheating when charging and then shuts down. when I'm only using it for music streaming, the temperature warning comes on in about 10 minutes, but the phone continues to work, even with the message that the phone needs to cool off. However, if I'm using music streaming and navigation(Apple Maps), then the phone overheats and shuts down in less than 5 minutes. It does not ever overheat or shutdown if I connect it via the USB-C cable, however.

It just happened about an hour ago when I left home at 6AM. Outside temperature was about 60 degrees. The AC inside the X1 was set to the usual 68 degrees. The phone was in the wireless charging pad with the roller coaster bar closed. The screen went dark and I looked at the phone and it had turned itself off. When I got to my office at 6:30AM, I was able to turn the phone back on again.

is this a problem with the iPhone 16 PM or the X1 wireless charging pad?

The charging pad in the X1 is essentially a “trickle” charger. It won’t charge a phone if there is less than 50% battery available, and if over 50%, will only charge about 10% an hour. I have that in writing from the service department of my dealer, as I have the same issue, but not limited to the iPhone 16 Pro.

Almost every says don't use the charging station when using it as 1, it doesn't provide enough charge it will continue to drain anyway, 2. as you have found that it can overheat even with the in theory cooling groves that are there.

It could also be an early iOS18 issue that is exasperating the issue maybe.

after reading Apple forums, it appears that a lot of iPhone 16 Pro Max owners are reporting overheating issues, even when the phone is not being charged.(wireless or wired) I have another 10 days before I can return my iPhone 16 Pro Max, guess I'll have to test it some more. :(

Wireless charging in general produces a lot of heat. Another thing to keep in mind considering the brand new phone is that there is a lot of background processing that happens after initial setup. It’s common for it to heat up when it’s doing this.

That said I’m not excusing Apple, I’ve nearly burned my hands on my 15 pro max well into owning it for months. The funny thing is the 16 series has vastly improved thermals so I’ve actually been considering upgrading just for that alone. Haven’t seen any overheating complaints on any tech forums, only positives saying it runs a lot cooler than the 15.

Do you have a wireless charger you can test indoors and do some of the same tasks, music/maps, to see if it overheats the same? If it does, I would get input from Apple in case it’s a faulty device. If it works just fine, I’d follow others’ advice and just refrain from using the wireless charger, maybe try again after a week or so when the phone has settled on indexing and setting up.

at least now I know my 16 Pro Max isn't the only having overheating issue... hopefully Apple can resolve it with a software update?

Interesting to see all these reports after I’ve only heard positives on the new thermals. Now im second guessing myself.
Last year was the same deal, tons of overheating reports, then Apple released a software update to fix it. My device never got better despite them “fixing” it.

do you use it naked? my previous iphone was the 14 Pro Max. I ended up ditching the case and just used it naked to make it cooler.

Apparently Apple has acknowledged the problem and will issue a software update for iPhone 16/pro users soon.

We had the same overheating issue with iPhone 15

My 15 pro just overheated for the 1st time when using the USB C connection. Im guessing it has something to do with the latest IOS 17.7 update.

Zero issues with mine on iOS18 on my 15 pro max whether using USB-C or MagSafe. The only time I get the temperature protection warning is if I've been using the phone intensively and is already warm before sticking it on the charger.

Are you getting the "iPhone needs to cool down" message, or the message where it says "charging will resume when....."?

Got that “iPhone needs to cool down" message only once when plugged in to a USB C 2 weeks. Nothing since.

I have an iPhone 13 so I’m not ‘with it’ like all you techies however I’ve never had an issue with the charging pad, yes it charges slower compared to a cable but I’ve never got out of the car with less charge than what I’ve started with.

For context I use Spotify via the phone so stream music to the car.

It does a job, maybe it’s a software issue on the new iPhones?
