I don't have it in me to battle it out - I'm just too big a fan of all BMWs (well, I'm not a big SUV guy I'll admit). But I'm with you on the incognito. Though I don't think the E92/93s are as instantly recognizable as the E46. I'm trading up because of the engine and the hardtop, but I still prefer the overall E46 look... the E92/93 look is sort of generi-lux.

In all seriousness though, I think the E93 is a different breed of convertible than the VW. But I think that goes for BMWs in general. Just in my row in the garage at work are 2 6-series verts, my car, a 335 vert and an S4 vert and all are driven by guys. Now maybe I'm in a gayer than average building and just don't realize it, but I doubt it. Plus it's LA... none of that small town thinking here.

Guys lighten up and thank you for your honest opinions. I hate to break it to you but even BMWNA itself specifically aims E93 towards gay men. Google "BMW gay ad" and see what comes up. Unshockingly in socal and other parts (e.g. florida) of the US BMW markets the car towards gay men. Here's the first thing that pops up on google.

http://www.gaywheels.com/bmw_ad_in_w...ywood_your.htm

Incase you don't get it words like "hardtop" and "firm bottom" aren't refering to women.

I can sit and talk shit but I was just trying to ask a genuine question and get genuine answers...my buddy

If you think this is bad, you should see what some of the clowns on other forums (cough..corvetteforum..cough) call "chick cars" "fagmobiles" or "hairdressers cars".......shit, in many peoples eyes unless you're driving an F350 p/u they think you are driving a fagwagon.

If you like a car why should you have to check with the gay police before you buy it. if you like it, you like it, period. if you're insecure and let the world tell you what you should and shouldn't buy with your own hard earned money, then that's just sad.

Wow, this thread has really taken quite a turn. I guess I'm not that surprised by all of the homophobic comments. Whenever the concept of a chick car is discussed, their is a group that immediately starts flaming about gay this or gay that.

My thoughts:

I really could care less about my E93 or its red color being called "chick" or "gay". All I know is that straight, gay, male, female, married, single...you name it I get all sorts of positive comments about my car. And even if I didn't, I love the car and it is a blast to drive and looks sweet or I wouldn't have bought it. I even loved my old Z3 with all of its faults (it made you feel every crack in the pavement and rattled like 1986 Buick), but boy was it a blast to take around corners.

I hate to say it, for fear of sounding like a homophobe, but really, convertibles are notorious for being chick cars. The Z4 seems to be more masculine than the Z3 was, and probably more so than the 335i. It's one thing to have a classic 2 seat roadster, but to have a 4 seater cabrio like a 3-er or a CLK is just downright questionable.

To the guy who questioned how he would feel if he was seen with another guy in his convertible, perhaps the better question is what would he say if he saw two guys in a convertible with the top down. Perhaps there's just a certain level of flambouyance in driving around with the topdown that is generally associated with homosexuality. (I'm trying to be completely serious now). Masculinitity, rightly or wrongly, has generally been associated with the "keep to yourself" "performance oriented" mindset that is more associated with a coupe than a cab.

But an e93 is still a nice car, and the guys who drive them on the boards aren't under attack or anything. But I can definitely see where the arguments on the board are coming from. Trying to think of masculine converts becomes difficult, because generally when you think of cars that come in coupe and convert, its generally thought that one is the girl's version of the other. SL vs. CL, CLK coupe (which is still a pretty girly car) vs. CLK cabrio (arguably the most notorious chick car of them all). For some reason, the E93 appears to lend itself to this argument more than the old one did. I'm going to go out there and argue that even the droptop versoins of lambos and ferraris are like that. The only convert cars I can think of that dont have that associated questionable-ness to them are boxsters, nsx's, and s2000s.

Only BMW vert I like is the 6 series. The rest just don't look as good as their hardtop counterparts imo...especially the Z4.
