Tire dressing is a love/hate relationship

Love the way it looks when a tire is clean and has that fresh shine after a couple coats of tire dressing. Hate the messy process and time it takes to clean them after a couple weeks. And after a couple days they just don't look that great. I'm convinced there's not a product or process that can withstand the punishment tires take on the road. Rant over. I gave in and did my new 2025 with the Conti's using CarPro Perl.

I've been using perl for a couple years but haven't in the last year or so as I was just tired of the process. I guess my post was just a rant and that I caved in and put a tire dressing on when I haven't done it in awhile. I really get the tires super clean too as I think the prep is important. But, in the end I just haven't had great success with any longevity. Longevity meaning even a couple weeks.

There's several tire "coatings" out there that are more durable. They don't maintain the high gloss "wet" look the whole time but keep the tire looking satin and darker. I've had them last 2-5 months which isn't bad. . . but if you're looking for a high gloss wet look all the time you just have to re-apply constantly.
I've tried Cerakote tire coating and Adams tire armor with decent results- just have to be realistic about expectations.

Perl is nice but they also sell Darkside which I switched to and lasts longer, especially in wet driving conditions.

I looked into those and don't think it's for me. I was going to test it out on my working van but never did.

Might have to try that but I have enough perl at the rate I'm using it now to last 2 more years.

I've tried them all, and found best for application, shine, and durability is Tr-Nova

My opinion may not be popular, but I can’t stand the tire shine; sorry. Paint should be shiny and tires should look like rubber (not black paint).

It’s a lot of work for something I don’t like.

Yep, have been using all along, maintain the matt finish just like new tire from factory and less dirt sticking. Only need to top up once in awhile, not every wash.

Not a fan of gloss finish as it looks too cheesy to me and also dirt magnet.

****I use many of the same products others have mentioned above for my tires but have found one of the best things people seem to not mention are the stock brake pads spewing brake dust over the sticky(ish) wet look compound on the tires and dulling them quite quickly.

Once I replaced my brake pads with super low brake dust ceramic pads - the tire shine products lasted a LOT longer and brake dust went down at least 90% versus stock for me which keeps my wheels looking clean seemingly in almost perpetuity, or until I have to just wash the car anyways.

Anyway, don't discount the reason your tire shine product doesn't remain black and shiny might be due to brake dust just accumulating very quickly.

My car now has about 7500 miles on it and the brake dust was reduced so much that even behind the front of the wheel most people look at the rims remain very clean and shiny too which is pretty cool.

So, to me it would seem low dust brake pads are probably as or more important than perhaps what chemical/dressing is being used to keep the tires black and perhaps shiny or at least a nice satin type finish.

It was really a game changer for me as I am very fastidious about my cars cleanliness and the wheels full of brake dust always really bothered me.

That was one of the first things I did was swap the stock pads to Brembo ceramics. Based on the one short drive I'd say it reduced the dust by 90% or more.

I've been using their graphene VRT. I don't know that the graphene does much but it was on sale a while back and I bought it. I actually really love it. Goes on easily, spreads itself into the little logos and things on the sidewalls, doesn't sling off onto the fender, is matte and stays that way a long time. I dribble a little onto a hex applicator and run it around the sidewalls. It's pretty easy and I'll probably buy more at some point.

If you're looking to stick with traditional dressing and want more longevity and water resistance give these videos a watch.
Luckily this guy went extreme nerd on tire shine testing so you don't have to.

TLDR- Adams VRT wins for standard dressings

Nice! I'll still watch it but that's good, it means I can be lazy and keep with it.

Have your local bodyshop clear coat your tires in a high gloss.

Same, except it’s a satin, not a matte, just like my frozen paint is a satin, not a matte. It’s perfect and lasts quite a while. Just a very nice black look, as it should be.
I don’t do the “wet” look. It makes my skin crawl.

Shiny has its place on some cars, my neighbor's classic Challenger for example actually looks awesome that way. But yeah not a newer car. Satin also seems to inherently last longer - or at least as it fades in spots it's more rubber like to start with and harder to notice.
