I would not recommend making any dog run for 10 miles keeping up with a bike. Maybe 3-5. Not so much that they can't but the wear and tear you would be putting on their joints and pads would be substantial from running on pavement constantly. Most dogs in general weren't really built for long distance running/jogging but more medium range and bursts of speed.

Even wolves who travel long distances a day don't do it at a constant jog/run.
oh ok. I read somewhere that they could run beside a horse for something like 30 miles.

I really wish weimaraners werent sooooooo energetic haha

What dog? The RR?

Maybe back in the day when it was more of a necessity out hunting for our food. Not that I know everything. I've just always had dogs and breed labs for a few years. Meet many people that took their dogs hunting and did the field trials. None ever had their dogs running distances like that and these were some highly active dogs.

Well I did some quick research. Just google their name and you'll get plenty of info. Coolest thing I learned is that back in africa they were used in packs of 2 to hunt lions. Now that's pretty bad ass haha

No distance was brought up but daily walks/jogs are a necessity. Very strong willed. Must have constant training and have a "alpha" presence from the master. Will be much more destructive then a lab, vizsla etc. if not kept in check. Also has a high rate of hip displaysia, which is why I would say stay away from overly long bikes if you did try to get the dog into that.

And yea RR are pretty badass lol It seems the closest fit for me. My only worry would be the exercise thing.

Even labs have high rates of hip displaysia. pretty much all medium to large dogs have that problem. It really starts to show at 6+ years old. Even all my labs activity levels fell off big time once they hit 7 or so. Not that they weren't active but they were no longer enegizer labs haha.

I was also considering a vizsla
RR's are awesome dogs, but they do require more exercise than the average dog. Vizsla's as well. You should expect that they will need to be outside 2-3 times a day for about 30-45 minutes each. If you are looking for a short haired, large dog, then get a Great Dane!!! I love that breed and other than 1 walk a day, they are pretty much known to lounge around all day.

I grew up with a weimaraner. We walked the dog in a huge nature preserve every morning where he could run like crazy and the same thing in the afternoon and the dog was STILL full of energy. They're not particularly smart (my Staffordshire Bull Terrier is MUCH more intelligent) and really require copious amounts of exercise. Not a dog for a first time dog owner or someone looking for a dog to just walk for a few minutes and chill with.

think of it like this...yes this breed was selectively bred to engage in mortal kombats with other dogs. why where they bred for this? well that goes into bull baiting and why bull baiting was outlawed back in the day...actually alot of dogs were bred for hunting and such game when dogs first became domesticated and helped man in the wilderness....pits, however, were bred for sport....much like the japanese Tosa. in any event, pits were bred to fight dogs. only dogs. they had to be bred to be extremely aggressive toward dogs and the exact opposite towards their handler. their handler had to walk into this "pit" after two dogs have fought without the thought of one of these dogs unlatching from a dog onto the handlers leg....matter of fact, i read one bloodline actually castrated dogs that snapped at their handler and were not able to contribute to their gene pool...because after all...what good is a dog who bites humans when they were bred to fight dogs....i had two pits. they were the absolute worst protectors. yea they barked when the doorbell rang but if you were a friend or foe they would jump and lick and jump and lock and run like a kid in a candy store....

if pit bulls where an horrible breed, blood thirsty killers...where are the stories about them killing kids in the 20s 30s 40s 50s 60s when they were much closer to the original game bloodlines??...the original fighting bloodlines?? that original stock is a thing from the past.... replaced with backyard breeders who breed theses 110 pound blue pits whose heads looks like hippos ha... and the results are the horrid actions frequented by most media....
One of my close friends has a blue nose.

I went with him when he first picked him up as a puppy at 8 weeks old.
I was the first person to hold him in my lap for the car ride home for 2 hours and I was around him as he grew up.
He's now around 70-80lbs and still plays around with me and licks me every time he sees me. He listens to me if I yell at him to stop or go another direction and he has never been aggressive with me.

However, with ANYONE else that he hasn't met yet or wasn't around him when he was a puppy, he goes straight for their neck. He WILL bite them and has bit other before.
Even when my friends girlfriend walked into his house, the pit jumped at her and snapped at her face right before we pulled him back.
He barks like crazy for as long as the person is there unless he put him in another room.

Sure you can say it's training, but this is the second pit (from my friends dogs) that I have seen act like this.

Like it or not, fact of the matter is that they are aggressive dogs.

Hell, we have two dogs in the family; a shih tzu and a boston terrier.
You can tell right away that the boston terrier is much more aggressive with his playing than the shih tzu is.
Pits are, on average, more aggressive than other dogs and I will not trust them around my small dogs nor around my kids.
Sorry, that's not a risk I'm willing to take. At the end of the day, it's a dog versus a human life that you're talking about.

If people like the look of a pit without the attitude I would look at a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. They only get to be about 35lbs and are extremely friendly. My dog has never growled at a person or dog and when a person comes over she runs to the door to say hi. They're so different in personality from pit-pits that they're exempt from the dangerous dog ban in the UK. The only problem with that is that some people claim that their American Staffs or APBTs are SBTs to attempt to keep them which occasionally gets them some bad, though erroneous, press when something goes wrong. They're known as "Nanny dogs" throughout the UK for being notoriously good with children. They are VERY rare in the US (very few breeders) but if you can find one you'll be very happy.

They say that Rhodies need a ridiculous amount of excercise and I try my best to give him as much as I can. However, whenever I bring him to a place where he can be off the leash, he'd rather spend all his time looking for crap to eat than running around! At around the age of 2, he really mellowed out a lot too.

It would be a great dog for you. And dont forget to check out the rescues first. Save a dog's life before seeing a breeder
