Here are the ones that come to mind for helping me realize it isn't just 'the rhythm section'
John Paul Jones for the classics Tony Levin (King Crimson, etc.) for the art rockers Kim Deal (Pixies) and/or Michelle Temple (Pere Ubu) for more modern stuff (probably should also put Krist Novaselic here). And Mark Sandman (Morphine) for really reinventing the whole instrument. |

Greatest Rock Bassist
In the spirit of recent threads, I figure since bass guitar is the instrument I play I would post this.
Pretty easy for me--Flea. The most influential bass player ever from my all time favorite band the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And I will throw in some honorable mentions and influences to me: Les Claypool (Primus) Martyn LeNoble( Porno for Pyros) John Taylor (Duran Duran) Eric Avery (Janes Addiction) P-Nut (311)

I grew up watching Primus when only 50 people showed up at the River theater in Guerneville. And even when they got big they played the same way.

We have that thread now too.
I have to give it to sea-tac. The man was an epic sport when us old timers made fun of his chosen theme. We need more posters like him here!

Sorry, I thought that this thread would be about the greatest rock bassist. But nobody has mentioned Norman Watt-Roy, so it obviously can't be.

One of the coolest bass moments I've seen was at a Steview Ray Vaughan show. He played the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver on July 22, 1990 (he died 5 weeks later) with Joe Cocker as his opening act. T.M. Stevens was playing with Cocker at the time.
Stevens joins SRV and Double Trouble onstage during part of the set and during Voodoo Child, SRV steps back and lets Stevens and Tommy Shannon take the front of the stage for what turns into dueling lead basses with SRV, Chris Layton and I think Reese Wynans laying down this great backbone for the Shannon and Shocka to riff off of. Was a really cool moment. Cocker was a great show, SRV was the best, and that show obviously sticks in mind for being one the final performances of a legend. But, we were already talking about it as one of our live show highlights and for me, the Stevens/Shannon thing was a big part of that. |

Chris Wolstenholme from Muse is the best new talent I've seen.
Classic guys - Chris Squire from Yes. Enjoy the activeness of Flea from RHCP. Always though Michael Anthony (while just above average on bass), has the best background vocals. |

Also a shout out for Jaco Pastorius. He was a very troubled soul and had a drug addiction. Probably the greatest jazz bassist.
