Here's a suggestion. Why don't you find a job first then move according to where you work. Just a thought since driving here in the LA area is pretty bad. All the freeways here are usually full of traffic. =\

I can work just about anywhere. Im fortunate enough that I can pretty much say I want to work somewhere and have a job.

I am one of very very few who do what I do, and do it well

I grew up in O.C. (no one actually says "The" O.C. like the show). I love it there and hope to move back some day (when I can find an interesting job that's close enough). Right now I'm just a few miles up the 405 in the South Bay (L.A. county, 2 miles from the beach).

Irvine is big and boring and too cookie-cutter-ish. (i.e. every track home looks like a carbon copy of the previous one). Plus it's getting pretty expensive there and it doesn't even border the ocean. Way overrated.

The Lagunas are nice (Laguna Hills, Niguel, and Beach). Laguna Hills is where you'll find the most reasonably priced homes in nice family oriented neighborhoods. Aliso Viejo is nearby and has a lot of newer homes and younger families, but is a bit pricey for what you get.

If you are still young and single, check out Newport Beach (if you can afford it) or Huntington Beach. Both are very nice and have some younger-feeling neighborhoods as well as family oriented neighborhoods.

Pretty much anywhere in south O.C. is nice. Coming from VA, CA will seem very expensive. I hope you're prepared for that. You almost have to be rich to own a house (or even condo) in a nice neighborhood in CA. But it is a great place to live. I'd never consider living anywhere but So. Cal.

Someone here suggested Costa Mesa. Nuh uh. Not if you can afford better. San Diego is nice, but pretty boring down there. It's getting more populated, but I still prefer O.C. Plus, with the O.C. you're only an hour away from your favorite museum, theater, restaurant, club, ... in L.A. You get the benefits of (some) less traffic, nicer homes and neighborhoods, and still have the activities of L.A.

But don't you have to get a job nearby first?

I live pretty close to DC, and its certainly not cheap to live here. While the places I would be looking will be a little more expensive, its not a whole lot more than here. On average, I would say its about 20k more than where I am sitting now, but I would also be making more in that area. Its a tradeoff...

As I said, Im not worried about finding a job. Ill be able to do it with little to no problem.

... and Im not dead set on California yet. There are a few other places I have been looking as well. Im just exploring options right now...

Well being that I'm employed at a mortgage lender, I can give you some suggestions if you like. However, if you can give an approximate price range and some preferences as to the type of housing/neighborhood you're looking for, I can probably give you better response.

I lived in Fullerton for about a year,

it's a fun little town, there are plenty of fun bars. You're close to where the los angeles angels of anaheim play, the NHL's ducks play right there too.

Brea was also really nice and has a nice downtown area to hang out in

The year I lived there, I didn't find a place I'd rather be in the OC (wasn't a huge fan of the beach towns down there anyways)

house, apt, studio?? anything in particular...and what is your budget??

that makes a big diff too...cause if you go close to the beach you are sacrificing space for location, unless you wanna spend the big bucks for a decent place...i live in walnut and the prices for houses jumped up alot =\
