That's the GT though, not the GXP. 40Hp difference, as well as wheels and suspension. |

would i pay 37k on a base 135i or 37k on a loaded GXP? i don't see how anyone would pay upwards of 40k+ on an entry level car... i know the Euro vs Dollar plays a part, but come on... i personally don't need a 4 door car, but for me, it will be my only vehicle besides a work truck... and since my gf works at the dealer, i pay $300 over invoice, whereas if i went to BMW, i'd have to fist fight with the salesman to get $1k below MSRP.. no doubt both cars are totally in different leagues, but personally i find they very much can be considered just the same... look at the Edmunds car video comparing the 135i to the Evo X... also, Brembo brakes, optional 6 speed manual, different front end, different motor (has a ls3 instead of the l76), and seats...

They are making strides. I had high hopes for the new G8 but it's just way too big for me. The car is the size of 5 class or even bigger, at least that's how I felt when I saw it at LA auto show. If they can fit this power plant on the G6 I may have gone for it.
The only commonality between the 1 and the G8 is power and speed in straight line. You can't make a full size sedan drive like a small go kart. Not even the M5

You're right about the size. The car was aimed at the full sized market, and is very close to the dimensions of the 5 Series. It's a much bigger car than I wanted also, and I didn't even seriously consider it when looking because of that. It is a damn nice car for the money though. There's nothing else that's RWD with that kind of power in its size and price range that even comes close. The Charger is the closest thing, and the interior in those cars is just awful, even if you can stand the exterior (which I can't). GM has done a very nice job with the G8. |

The Holden supplied GTO was probably the best-built, best-value in GM's lineup when it was introduced. At the time it was the BEST interior in a GM car. The trivia question for the GTO is what Ford product was it's contemporary challenger? The Mercury Marauder. Not even a fair fight. ; -)
The knock on the GTO was styling, not flashy enough for the typical Pontiac buyer. But man it is a GREAT car. I haven't driven a G8 yet - but it's a heck of a value and if the build quality is as good as the GTOs was, it'll be a winner. |

Wouldn't it be nice if GM would take the time to actually design a car from the ground up at some point? You know, instead of cobbling together cars from the last generation/from other countries/the generic parts bin.
Another idea, go to each Asian and German dealer and buy one of each car and take notes. They would see why they get their asses kicked all the time! Yeh I know the new Malibu is getting good reviews, but still. My friend just took delivery of a Malibu and as I was looking at the rear of the car I noticed one of the exhaust pipes was about 1/2" lower than the other. I guess the quality control staff had a union meeting to attend when that one came off the line. The numbers are decent on this new car but my prediction is it will still be underwelming. At least Pontiac quit putting so much damn plastic cladding on the cars...geez. |

a couple of my friends and my self have had GM LS motor cars camaro SS, GTOs, Cadillac CTS-V, and Corvettes. Besides the corvettes GM never completes the package there is always a week point. most of them tend to be the rear end and brakes. it's a shame they put all that HP in a car that cant really handle it. so personally I wouldn't touch a G8 for a year or two to see what the week point is and how much the fix will be.

The G8 GXP is the best car out there if you are an american car only shopper. I don't need all the extra room, and it weighs about 4,050#. I couldn't believe how high the drivers seat was. I adjusted it all the way down and it was way TOO high, that alone turned me way off. NO WAY. YUK. The cheap silver spray painted dash and console parts look very cheap. They should just make the cheap plastic dark grey or black. |

Here's a little Wiki blurb on the Roots blower - it's been around for awhile - almost a century and a half.

.. I believe a roots style blower is used on the new ZR1 ... and I had an Eaton on my 04 cobra ... pretty rock solid the way the engine was built from the factory. That would be the difference .. stock internals = low boost ... build the engine for higher boost .. Crowley

They are talking about selling an Elcamino in a few years based on the same platform. They have been selling down under for many years. Funny how GM has to import cars to the USA.

It makes good sense actually. Holden, like BMW, never gave up on RWD platforms. If you want a good, mature RWD platform, you go to where ever in the corporation you can get it. Developement and production tooling for this kind of thing costs a fortune, and there's no point in building one there and a different one here. It's no different than BMW importing cars to Germany. |

The GTO is a fun car to drive, but if you value refinement and engineering like I do, the GTO lets you down. But it's definitely the best performance bang for the buck. I bought my '06 brand new with 16 miles, and was one of the last made (6/06 build date, and last one was produced 6/7/06). I currently have 6,700 miles, put $3K in tasteful, non-engine mods, and it's in immaculate condition (QSM silver/red, 6M, 18s). If somebody gives me $24.5K, it's sold. I'll miss the incredible sound the V8 makes, and the raw power, but I'm ready for something more refined. And the 135i happens to be even quicker than the goat (4.7 vs 4.8); amazing. Wish I could justify keeping it, but can't. For youngsters, it's a great car for the money. Later.
