Many vets will let you pay off large bills in installments. They know that the treatments often cost a lot more than most families can pay immediately.

I also just went through this with my Rottweiler. He had osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and was treated at the wonderful vet school at Auburn. We amputated his left rear leg and, after chemo, he had a great life for another two years as a three-legged Rottweiler (you don't think that got a lot of attention around town?!?). I would not trade the experience for anything. I don't know about the chemo regimen you are facing, but ours was cutting edge and ended up costing substantially less than $12K including hotel stays, etc. Unless you are a dog owner, you would not understand. Good luck to you.

Your dog was lucky to have an owner like you.

Sad, but true. It's even selfish to put a dog thru that hell IMO. And downright crazy to even think about it if you don't have the means. If saving a dog's life regardless of its future quality of life was so important to the OP, he should have insured it.

I absolutely agree with that. It wouldn't even be appropriate for a family member, but a dog? Again, if spending that ridiculous sum on a pet is OP's thing, he should have insured it. But can't stress enough most of the time it's not fair for the dog. Dogs are not human, don't have any loved ones except the owner(s), and don't have to support anybody. So as somebody already said, you have to draw the line somewhere IN ADVANCE (especially without unlimited funds), so you know where the road ends. Good luck.

This thread is quite enlightening. OP just got laid off and he's considering spending $12k on treatments for his pet, which may require him to sell his car? Interesting way to prioritize things.

Keep the car and put your dog to rest. Here's why:

Radiation treatment itself is very hard on the body. Even if one can beat the cancer which is a very big "if", the radiation alone could leave your dog too weak to survive more than a few months. Depends also how old and robust your dog is. Odds are that if you sell your car to treat your dog, you will end up losing both the car and the dog in the end anyway. By keeping the car, you still have the car, and putting your dog down peacefully and quickly is a better way to go than what could well end up being a slow painful death anyway.

Good luck with this tough decision.

People can be attached to their pets. We have a parrot that sits and eats at our dining room table with us every night for dinner. However, your dog is not a "family member like any other family member". If your dog dies you can go out an buy another one. If your child dies, you can not buy another one. There is a difference.

Maybe I missed it, but where exactly does he ask for money? His post was just venting to get something off his chest. As someone with three dogs, I feel the humane thing to do is put it to sleep. Hardest thing I have ever done, but for me it would be worse to see it in pain. Obviously you have a life you need to provide for and the value of that car can be stretched a long way if needed.

This is true. I don't think i could put my dog through radiation treatments. I truly love my dog, he's like my kid. My wife and i don't have any children so he is literally like my kid. Now maybe because my dog is pushing 12 years old i can accept the fact that he's gonna be gone soon, but at the end of the day he's a dog. Weather he dies prematurely or dies after a full life, i will get another dog and i'm pretty sure i'll love the next one just as much.

As much as it would pain me, i believe we would put him down in this situation.

Ours tolerated his chemo wonderfully - no problems. But every dog, like every person, is different.

I'm not sure what the OP has been through in his personal life but, I've had the greater difficulty of having to lose a close person in my life. And after being through an experience such as that, I'd never even consider sacrificing on the same level for a dog. I'd sell anything I had to in a heartbeat to save a person. But a dog, I'd have to say no. I have nothing against pets but just realize there will be other sacrifices required of you later down in your life. And life is unpredictable. I wouldn't max-out all your options now, at this stage in your life, for a dog.

Just my two cents.

Those who think a dog is on the same level as a child has never had children before. Put it this way, if you could only save your dog or your child, I would hope every single one of you would choose your child.

I'm not gonna speak my mind on this post, because if I do, I know I will get my account banned. *NO work, and your gonna spend 12K on a dog? There are thousands of stray dogs, and............. not gonna say anything else.

This.

It's only money.

Putting a cap on what you'd spend on a dog?

Do all dogs a favor and stay the fawk away from them!

The unwavering love and loyalty that a dog provides is more than most people can even comprehend.

+1

Nobody is comparing a dog to a child. It is about a dog or a car. And a car is "just" a car. You will have another one and another one and another one. But a dog a living creature with real feelings for you.

I would sell my car - of course if there was no other choice. But I would do everything possible to help my four legged friend.

Call me crazy, but you sound like the Douche here. You don't know the guy and with just a small /quick explanation you resort to an emotional tirade. There are many ways to reason out ones thought on this topic, yours isn't the only valid one.

That's really a tough choice... Not sure what i would do.

I got dog health insurance myself so I would never have to choose.
