Depressing that BMW would consider this. AMG are for burn outs and sound and do not have the handling finesse and feel of M. If M is heading in the direction of AMG this is not good. This would be like the RS5 chief engineer being tasked with design of the next M3/4. No!

As an engineer, you are absolutely correct. Perhaps he's deviating from AMG to fulfill his desires, which are contrary to AMG's philosophy.

I agree, you can only design with what you are given, he does not create the AMG MB philosophy he does best to design cars that fit within those parameters.

Some of these responses are ridiculous. The guy is an engineer end of story, and obviously a good one to have worked his way to the top of AMG. Just because he worked on making AMG cars doesn't mean that's all he knows how to engineer. He designed cars that fit AMG's corporate culture, which is different than BMW M's, but there is no reason he could not design a car that fits in BMW M's corporate culture, the magic BMW fairy doesn't have to visit you for you to work for BMW. You just have to understand what BMW mission is and work toward it. Its a full company effort to build a car, and everything gets approved by the board of directors...no one worker can change that.

When a company is flushed with cash from breaking record profits and sells like BMW they will start to tinker with all kinds of crazy ideas...

AMG's have had great chassis and powetrains over the last few year. This guy will fit right in at BMW M. I for one am glad he's joining the ranks. I just hope AMG's replacement for him is good too, as I would hate to see the overall segment lose its luster.

I'm a chip design engineer.
Just because I design a type of chip for my current employer does not mean I can't design a different chip for someone else. I don't see how this is any different. |

I don't understand why would he be the head? He can be a great additive to the team but not necessarily needed or coming to save them from an impending doom called the M division continuous success!

And he will work around M's philosphy for sure, and as an engineer he must be a great one to have worked his way up on AMG, which lets not forget, also supplies engines for some great cars, like pagani. People saying that AMG cars of late can only go fast in a straight line def lives in a cave or are too biased. Great addition to BMWs M division, in fact, IMHO couldnt be a better addition. |
