it's fun to see what people are posting as "old school" rap that's better than "modern" rap. Can definitely get a feel for the posters age based on the selections. As a mid-40's sorta dude my top 10 list of "real" rap is a bit older than most here:
- NWA - Public Enemy - The DOC - Big Daddy Kane - Cool Moe Dee - LL Cool J - 2 Live Crew - Eric B and Rakim - Too $hort - EPMD |

Busta Rhymes is the greatest MC of all time!!!
These days, an occasional hip hop track goes hard: Kevin Gates: "Really Really" Future "Karate" Kendrick Lamar But nothing these days even comes close to the days of: LL Cool J EPMD Ice Cube Snoop Dogg Method Mqn Red Man In fact... Outside of HOUSE music, today's music in general sucks. 80's Music Forever!!!! |

Don't get me started... just yesterday I was running errands and listening to Non Phixion while thinking what the hell happened to rap music.
Rap is supposed to be about lyrics and now you can barely understand what they're saying. As an immigrant, listening to rap has helped me tremendously in developing my English language skills. Fortunately, there are still rappers out there that are keeping the craft alive. |

Rap started going downhill for me when i heard lil jon and lil wanye. Nothing beats older rap/hip hop. Rappers now dont even sound good even when they are autotunned! And dont get my started on the mumble rap trash, I really dont understand and will never. I gave up with radio stations too, I find myself changing stations more than listening to a single station. But I do enjoy 93.5 KDAY in socal!
I stick to my old school tracks and continue to enjoy them.

Nas' new album is pretty dope. One of the very few rappers trying to bring attention to the current plight of being black in America. Not that it's changed much in the last 50 years.

The definitions have been skewed...
Lemme clear them up. This is RAP! With each verse I build a curse So rappers can't capture Moe Dee's rapture After I got ya I have to slap ya Senseless with Endless rhymes don't pretned this Is anything short of stupendous And when this rhyme is done Your mind will become So trapped in the rap You'll lust on another one You gotta wait it takes time I don't write I build a rhyme I draw plans draft the diagrams An architect in effect And it slams And if it's weak when I'm done Renovate and build another one I go to work!!

And this is a wannabe rapper that got caught up in the game trying to be "modern day" rap. But oh no, he got his tail yanked because he wasn't trying to be "big time"..oh, and he used the BIGGEST sample from the 90's to get on...and everyone called him a punk and junk.
Fantastic track but fail because he was GOOD but didn't talk about killing anyone...

RAP:
Money is power, sling crack, weed and powder Fiends come through every hour S'all about that dollar and we nah no deal with cowards Weak lambs get devoured by the lion In the concrete jungle, the strong stand and rumble The weak fold and crumble, it's the land of trouble Brooklyn, home of the greatest rappers Big comes first, then the Queen comes after... Now put ya lighters up...

Plenty of shit music and every era… I judge music by individual songs. I mostly like music from the 70s and 80s but some the new stuff are pretty good too

Been listening to rap since 90s and it has changed quite a bit. A lot of these so-called mumble rap artists and others are just putting out mainstream albums for money; there doesn't seem to be anything lyrically provocative like Tupac and so many other rappers before.
However, I can't say ALL of modern rap artists are shit. The most influential and my all-time favorite as of today is Kendrick Lamar. His Good Kid M.A.A.D City album drew me in so hard with an amazing storytelling about his life. He can paint a canvas with his lyrics and take you back to Compton to show you his life. And his music videos are the hallmarks of a true artist--just so much going on. He definitely doesn't glorify any of the drug & alcohol use such as today's modern rappers and instead he pretty much is trying to uplift the young, black generation of our time to do something about their lives. Give him a listen guys. Not all rap artists' today suck. |
