I just ferried high school seniors back and forth from beach week, it has a long wheelbase due to the transverse layout. So X1 is fine for baby seats.

The car isn't expensive enough to offer as an EV for BMW in the US. This car would be a homerun and would sell out quickly. BMW is greedy and wants to sell a more expensive EV instead.

If BMW wants to truly compete in the EV car segment they need to bring the entire iX line-up , i7 and i4 will definitely not do it. I cant think of one reason why anybody would get an i7 over a Tesla S, never mind Plaid.

Because X3 is designed for a longitudinal mounted engine with space for an I6 and is rear wheel drive focused while X1 is designed for a transverse mount I4 engine and front wheel drive based. The length from the front of the car to the front of the passenger dept is longer in the X3, thus the overall length is longer while interior space is very similar (within an inch or so). Compare the specs of the current X1 to X3. These are the BMWUSA published specs for the current gen X1 and X3 (the new U11 is a few inches longer). Length: X1 175.5 X3 185.9 Width: X1 71.7 X3 74.4 Headroom: X1 41.9 X3 41.1 Legroom F/R: X1 40.4/37.0 X3 40.3/36.4 Shoulder Room F/R: X1 55.6/55.2 X3 57.6/56 Cargo Capacity: X1 27.1-58.7 X3 28.7-62.7 So as far as head room and leg room, X1 actually has more than X3. So if you can fit a child seat in X3, you can definitely fit one in X1. We have used many different child seats in my wife's X3, and have had no problem fitting them in loaner X1's over the years. |

There are objective driving conditions in the US which are markedly different than in most of Europe. I could probably use an EV as daily in my part of the US, but it’s different in Ohio or Montana or Colorado.

And that's actually the key point: the "staid" European bureaucracies are building new infrastructure faster than the "nimble" American enterprises. |

EVs are a transitional platform. The US market is not responding to the inefficiency and PIA factor of EV.

Unless you own a Tesla the charging infrastructure in the US is pretty bad. I could see why car companies would be hesitant right now to bring more EVs. Bad for brand marketing if people start dumping them after 2 years.

I would order i7 40 if they offered it at the same price as the 740. Tesla model S is not even on my radar. Nobody is buying that car in Norway anymore after the germans started to make premium EVs. Sales are rock bottom, only TM3 / Y is selling. S or X money is going to E Trons, taycan and EQS atm.

The ICE-EV pricing and functionality delta is a major sales challenge for any model that's offered in both variants. This is why I think it's smart for Ford to keep their EV models from sharing a showroom floor with their ICE offerings. It helps EVs to keep the comparison as distant as possible.

The real issues are stop frequency and charge times on freeway slogs. Stopping every 200-250 miles to charge for 30-40 minutes would suck. That happens in Tesla too though. For an around town or within a few hundred miles of home an EV is pretty compelling now.

Or, with the US being such a lawsuit-trigger place, they are waiting for the initial kinks to be ironed out before bringing it here. Or, something something completely different |
