I’m always confused as to why saloon car owners don’t understand why people buy SUVs. The reality is SUVs are far more comfortable and offer a much nicer driving position to view the world. Sure they don’t handle as well but frankly I care much less about that now than when I was 20 or 30 and far more about how I feel when I arrive at my destination ! My back (which used to be an issue) never suffers now.

I liken it to flying in business or first class v flying further back in the cabin and I would never go back to a lower riding car again.

I've had SUV and saloons I've never factored the ride in the decision, in fact I've found for BMWs the ride sometimes is more compliant in a saloon than an SUV as they often need to firm the ride up in an SUV to offset the higher centre of gravity to get the expected BMW driving feel. The same is true of the extra weight in a PHEV/EV can often make the ride suffer you can't disguise the need to control the extra mass in some way. They get better but I've haven't found a saloon or touring to have worse ride unless you look at an M car myself, quite the contrary with the 3 having full adaptive when I last drove it.

In an age of efficiency some also see that the heavier weights an SUV tends to have are also counter to where the market is trying to head. Yes more SUVs are more aero efficient than they used to be but mass plays a big part in the equation.

We both have SUVs I'm just replying the views and conversations that go on across these boards. I've had them all, 3, 5 x1 x3 5GT all for different reasons. Up to each which one they find the best for them, but I can certainly see the varying opinions each group has and why.

Sure it goes without saying it’s horses for courses. I spent 20 years testing cars so can appreciate all sectors but will remain in an SUV until my termination date 😉

SUV versus saloon. I think SUVs have come a long way in terms of getting better handling and braking compared to before. Hence more consumers are shifting their preference to SUVs as they have easier ingress/egress, generally more headroom, 4WD in many cases to deal with the messy roads, bigger trunk space etc. Yet the ride quality isn’t like what SUVs had back in the days.

However, put a blindfold and dump me into a sedan and then an SUV. I am sure I would pick the sedan in terms of ride quality every time. SUVs tend to have a small wobble unless it’s a really big one. I am really sensitive to that wobble. After all these cars just have a high center of gravity. It ain’t a dealbreaker, but I definitely would rate SUVs having a slightly inferior ride comfort.

Of course, things have changed after introduction of EVs, as the ergonomics for most saloon EVs are actually relatively poor once the floor’s raised. The EVs also tend to keep a bigger portion of the weight closer to the floor, so the wobble factor isn’t as big of a deal (my experiences based on iX, iX3, EQB, EQC, Tesla Model X and Y, and BYD Attos 3 as a passenger). So the ride comfort gap might have even flipped as a result.

It also depends a lot of what kind of roads you drive on. I live in relatively hilly environments with a lot of turns one after another, and drive at comparatively lower average speeds compared to UK/America etc. Even my kids tell me sedans are more comfortable when they know nothing about cars. Same driver on same roads. SUVs aren’t exactly great at managing roads with more ripples especially when the car needs to go through bends with a lot of elevation changes. I do admit SUVs handle rougher roads paved with concrete and larger patches of imperfections. I believe this is due to the bigger overall diameter of the tires. Sedans tend to have overall smaller tires, which made lead to your conclusion that saloons are more comfortable.

There are roads in the city that my Honda Odyssey was superior in ride than the Model X, and others where the GLC clearly outshines both. Yet there are patches of roads I need to slow way down in the GLC because the wobble was just killing me even as a driver.

I loved the first gen X2. I was really really hoping for something even better looking with the second generation. I had my checkbook ready to go. What a disappointment

I think it’s just more generic compared to the U11 X1.

I don’t think it looks anything like the Dodge thingy, the only similarity is the colour. Sorry poor comparison.

Look forward to seeing the X2 in the flesh, can’t see me getting one but looks different.

I think it's nicer than the original, more mature and sophisticated. Although I kinda wish the side roundels remained.

That being said, my wife likes it and we will be trading in her GLA 250 in for it. We'll be dropping a deposit next weekend.

That said, I just feel these even numbered X-cars are just not meant for mass markets, or more like I just don't see the mass market would find this appealing (more so due to price, practicality, etc). These things are kinda like trying to sell a 2door C-class or station wagon kinda thing IMO.
This hate for the Coupe SUV has been around since the very first X6 was revealed.

Empty nester here, I’ve owned the G01 and now have the X4 M40. I dont prefer the generally common SUV shape.

I love the shape. It may not be for everyone, but I’m about it. This will be my first BMW and will be my daily driver. The cargo space is also much more comparable to the X1, unlike the last generation.

From the UK here.

Put down a deposit on the new x2 m35i today. Think it looks amazing.

I couldn’t justify paying £2k for the frozen blue colour though. So went for white.

Did they give you a production number and build week yet? Do you know the specific date dealers are able to sell the new X2's?

What color interior did you choose?

in other words, still plenty of time for your to change your mind and opt for the frozen blue paint?

I almost got the frozen grey for my X1... I also thought that I couldn't justify spending a couple of thousand dollars(US) for it...

but when I finally saw a frozen grey X1 in person, I kind of felt a little regret... well, only a little bit..

I wish I could mate

I’ve hit my budget limit with all the other options. Only other colour I was contemplating was the fire red which is a £500 add on.

That's a wise when buying car. Set a limit and do not exceed it. That's how I kept my X1 price exactly under my planned budget. No options that I don't absolutely need.

If I live in Europe, I will get the X1 with 18d engine because that's all I need. (look under my user name) I once had a Mercedes C180(4-cylinder, no turbo or supercharger) and it was more than plenty for me. My friends were all wondering why I didn't got for a C280(6-cylinder) or C43(8-cylinder). I told them it was my money and if a 4-cylinder suited my driving style, there was no sense in paying extra for extra horses.
