Sorry, I didn't mean you specifically and wasn't trying to throw shade. I was just speaking generally because the second I opened the thread and saw those exhaust tips I knew the dilution talk was gonna overshadow what is generally a pretty cool looking SUV(CUV?).

I had an X1 once. It was terrible.

I only found out after I turned it in at the end of the lease that it was actually built off the Mini platform, which explained a lot.

And the first M3 was a 4 cylinder. Although many disagreed it should be a 4 cylinder too since it had less power than the 325i…
I thought the 35i always meant N55 that’s what I meant by that
Yeah if any car has an M associated with it I think 6 cylinders is a must, just my opinion. The E30 excluded, of course. I meant mostly in this turbo charged era were in

oof Stand corrected. It is HK.

It just seems they stepped up their speaker grill game. Not bad.

I just think you’re new to the brand, and that’s fine. There’s a larger history to be found.
35i were 3.5l engines, then reused for the N54. Back then it made no sense, since the N54 was a 3l. To this day some folks call their cars “3.5” (X3s, X5s). If you browse the forun you’ll see the mistakes.

Current M35is exist since 2015 as a 4 cylinder. Nothing new. It’s just new to the X1. The 1 series, 2 series, X2, etc all had it.

All of these front wheel drive cars are called this.

Want to talk blasphemy, we should be talking about how the letter M was found in front wheel drive vehicles. But again, this is last decade already…

Now an X1M would truly be triggering to most, since it’d be the first front wheel drive M car.

They should call it X1 JCW (John Cooper Works). (Or 135i JCW, 235i JCW, etc.)

To start, this looks great, both inside and out.

But can someone please explain to me why this X1 M35i has more performance / M options available to it than a m240/m340????

- Standard adaptive suspension (option on m340, standard on m240)
- M sport seats (not available on m240 or m340 in NA, which I've never understood, especially since Audi and Merc offer upgraded sport seats in NA)
- M compound brakes (don't think these are an option on m240/m340 from the factory)
- Quad exhausts (I'm all for keeping these reserved for the full M cars, but the aftermarket exhausts for the 240/340 are quad exhausts anyway so what does it really matter)

Also the new steering wheel looks great.

It's just odd to me that this car gets more performance options/specs than the far more sporty m240/m340.

An X1M would be AWD. Albeit FWD-based.

The M240/M340 are 'old' at this point, and the X1 has a newer platform and strategy, thus giving more options for performance options/specs.

Expect the next-gen 2er/3er to catch up.

It's not a real "adaptive suspension" it's more BMW word games.

It's M adaptive suspension which just means fancy shocks.

Same as the current grilles no changes. base models have plastic ones, fancier ones get metal.

I really like this little guy for the right person. It would never be enough car for me, but I’m not the target market. Plus, it’s not horrendous.

With all that being said, there was a time when quad tailpipes meant something. Same thing with the letter “M.”

For the consumer looking to have some (teeny tiny?) bit of the M experience due to the trickle down of aesthetic/parts (quad pipes, M kidney grille with vertical double bars a la the F90, M side view mirrors), components (drilled M compound brakes), and systems formerly reserved for higher market (and higher price point) cars, this is fantastic. For the M enthusiast (especially V8 M car owners) this is just a further dilution of what cars bearing that letter used to mean.

Not trying to sound classist as some others implied earlier in this thread — just trying to respect product segmentation. As carseatsm5 said, people pay for the differentiation.

Probably bc there will be no true M model for the X1. Plus, the X1 is an all new model. Expect to see similar upgrades to the m performance models for other all new generations as they’re released.

Pointless upgrade for soccer moms who can’t drive X3 M40i.

An M lite car with 4 banger coz B58 is an overkill.

This will make it into the 2 series and possibly 3 series going forward.
I am enthusiast. Multiple, serial BMW and M car owner. For our family car we went down market from an X3 35i M Sport to an X2 M35i.

Guess what, the X2 is twice the fun. Provides entertainment off the track, and sometimes on the track as well. My track group keeps asking me to bring it again, they were blown away.

The one thing they improved in this X1 version is to add a DCT. Yum!

Was thinking they put old school Aisin. Interesting what DCT. Maybe same Magna manufacture that in current X1, but the model that handles extra HP/torque. We will know soon.

I think this looks dandy and all, but $51K?!? Add some options you're at what like $60,000 for an X1? That's a shit ton of money for a compact CUV.

Certainly see you point there. X2 was a different animal, certainly fun.

I am wondering what engine variant is this and how reliable given the turbos pumping that extra bhp. First time a 4 banger is going over 300 hp.

It would be a very compelling city car (for some) with adaptive M suspension standard and smaller wheelbase for ease of parking. XDrive for those occasional ski trips.

Still no iDrive scroll wheel bugs me the most about the new X1. This one should have been upgraded, but they conveniently copy pasted the interior.

But not for the high power fwd cars to date. BMW used the Aisin 8-Speed gearbox in the F4x Mx35i cars. It was not bad, but was a bit wacky at times. Lets see what the new 7-DCT is up to.
