below is a pic of my X1 taken just two hours after delivery.

6 months and 2700 miles later, it seems to have settled down lower, by about half an inch, but that may be just my imagination? but the wheel gap sure doesn't seem as big as 6 months ago.

There is a difference for sure, but I’m wondering if it’s got anything to do with changing to 20”. Although, I don’t think it should since the end result is the same tire size (+/- a few millimetres)

So yeah, I think it’s just a matter of break in

back to the wheel gap... I did think about getting it in Sapphire Black Metallic because with black cars, the wheel gap is barely noticeable.

It looks stunning in black too! And the wheel gap will definitely not be as noticeable. But I think the upkeep of black paint is just as difficult as frozen colours.

The iX1 stance/gap definitely looks lower than the ICE X1's, likely from the weight of the batteries as you said. The gap that most concerns me is from top of tire to center bottom of fender. Will continue to look at pics and hopefully see one in person (although my local dealer has no X1's in stock at the moment) before placing the order, don't think it's a deal breaker but I wonder why BMW would have set the car up like this.

I think it’s most likely because it’s not a high-end BMW and not a “true” M car.

Also likely due to the suspension not being fully adaptive as described and/or because no air suspension is offered.

I think the truly low stance SUVs from factory are reserved for the M Competition models.

the target customers may explain this... at least at my BMW dealer, most of the X1 and X3 buyers in my area are over 60 and female. strangely, the second biggest group of X1 buyers are 20-something "kids"(again, slight majority are female) who work at the tech companies around here. (that info was passed to me by my BMW salesman)

of course, I don't think that's what BMW intended... but real sales figures don't lie, do they? like the old Porsche 928 which ended up being the most popular car for dentists and doctors around here.

Definitely more pronounced on 19” wheels but I don’t mind it for an SAV

nice!

did NY become the latest state to stop requiring front license plates?

also, may I suggest a black cover for your EZpass transponder? I use it in all of my cars. Looks better that way, IMHO.

I’m in NJ which still requires a plate but because my temp plate is good until mid Dec, I’m going to run with it until I legally can’t. I have a tow hook mount ready to throw on once this expires.

definitely not, still need both plates and an annual inspection OTOH registration is still relatively inexpressive and no excise taxes yet

PS we both clearly need a life posting quickly on a Saturday night

this is the one I bought... may or may not be the best, but it was cheap and worked fine, good enough to keep the white EZpass transponder almost invisible on the windshield. Just make sure it's the same shape as the EZpass issued by New Jersey.

baseball season ended. my only other hobby is gardening and working on my beloved lawn... but it already got cold and they entered fall/winter dormancy. there is not much to do until next spring.

Saw the M35i up close and in person for the first time, there definitely is a wheel gap with the stock 19's but it wasn't horrible. Having the 20's helps but I need all seasons stock from the dealer and BMW doesn't offer AS for their 20's for some reason (Porsche does, see below). You would think after owning 2 M40i's in a row with adaptive suspension I would know if putting the car in sport/+ visibly lowers the car a bit but I'm not sure - I don't think it does. Gap wasn't a deal breaker but it would bug me, compared it to other BMW's in the showroom and it was definitely there. Ended up splurging and ordering a Macan S but the M35i looked good! - portimao blue which isn't normally my thing but suited the car. Great package overall, enjoy your cars everyone.

H&R makes lowering springs for the new X1 but nothing for the M35i yet, I reached out and asked.

The more time goes on, the less the gap bothers me. It may be settling or I may be getting used to it.

I lease my vehicles so lowering springs aren’t an option.

Do you think those adhesive strips eventually wear out and cause your ez pass to fall off? I currently use ez pass holders with suction cups and they wear off over time which I hate.

the ones provide by my state's EZPass people have little 3M adhesive strips... falling off was not a problem because it took me a good 10 minutes to pry it off when I was putting on a black EZPass cover. Ended up having to use a thin steel wire(from floral arrangement class) to literally cut through the 3M adhesive tape...

I probably didn't read the lease agreement when I turned my leased Mercedes into a theater on wheels. Installed all new speakers and 3 amps, one of which was driving the custom subwoofer enclosure which took up the entire trunk.... They didn't know when I returned the car 2 years later... because when I returned the car, everything was removed, leaving no traces.(well, unless the took off all interior panels and the rear deck and also inspect all the wiring harnesses under the floor.

Or another lease car before that where I replaced all the springs, shocks and sway bars with beefier ones...as well as much louder exhaust and strut tower bars.(plus 19" BBW wheels on 225/40/18 tires) Again, a month before lease ended, I put all the original parts back in. The aftermarket stuff all went to friends or eBay.

Of course, I'm now way too old to do such drastic car modifications. Now I just want to drive at a relaxed pace and enjoy the warm tea(edit: usually just hot water with a slice of lemon) in my travel mug... and listen to some Kenny G.

You can do almost whatever you want while you have the car as long as it’s reversible and removed before turning the car back in.

You can sell the springs on when you return the lease and make some money back as well.
