S65 Engine builders in VIC/NSW
Hi All,
Hope for the best but plan for the worst. I may need to rebuild, I'm located over in the West and we aren't flodded with experainced S65 rebuilders. So I'm thinking I'll send the motor or even the entire car interestate. I know all the mechanics in WA and some good ones in Qld. Question, which mechanic has the most experiance in building quality S65's? Thanks Chris PS feel free to discuss what you might change given the chance to rebuild. |

Have you had any luck with BMW acknowledging the M3's have a bearing and oil starvation issue?
I've heard of a 5 Aussie M3's engines blowing and BMW couldn't care less. In USA, BMW-NA haven't publicly announced it, but seem to replace/repair everyone's engines regardless of whether they are in warranty or not, on a case by case basis. Then they changed the rules to allow a thinner oil. There's even a video on youtube of a guy racing his M3, blew the bearings and a threw a rod and he got a new engine outside warranty. |

A friend in the exact situation went that route.
Had 3x BMW engineers come out to inspect. Outside of warranty and modified so didn't want to know about it. Be in interested to hear of someone outside of warranty in oz getting a replacement. Quote:

Hey mate that is definitely rod knock. Cyl 5 is usually first culprit. Due to bad main bearings and oil starvation, the rod bearings and rods overheat and stretch/warp and almost always also scratches the crank. Sorry to say! Don't drive it or you may eventually damage the block or throw a rod out the side. IMO this is a BMW defect. Stock or modified, our cars are all at risk!! |

I would talk to either the Brisbane workshop or Andrew at Southern BM in Melbourne for a plain rebuild. What you'll want is to also have the bearing tolerance improved as part of rebuilt. Stock tolerance is about a thousand if an inch, so it's not hard to see why oil starvation occurs. My tolerance is now 2.5x wider.
The hardest part, that is easy to fuck is the vanos. It's coiled together and without the correct tools will pop open when dismantled. There's also apparently a knack to then getting it setup with correct timing. If you want to bore it and stroke it out then I would recommend sending it to VAC or Gintani USA but expect to be without a motor several months and a few thousand in shipping |

Return to stock. Then get diagnosed by BMW. Then get lots of web evidence on the bearing issues the S65 has and get BMW to step up.
If they refuse get a lawyer to write a letter. Has worked before for guys getting the E46 M3 subframe done. I'd try that before forking out $$$$ |

Thanks for the advice Jarrod, you're likely right.
Other than getting the tolerances exact, what else do you recommend with a blueprint? Who are the contacts at in Qld and NSW. So far I've only spoken to Advan who have built 4. Dave D has a guy who he swears by in Qld. What I like about Advan is they also organise shipping for $400 odd (wa). Thought about it Adin, Jarrod actually is working on a case. Dave had no luck with them and I doubt I will either. I accept the risk when modifying. |

Both Yeah, Mike. My main bearing tolerance is now 2.5x wider than stock, which is apparently only 0.001". I run stock compression 12.0:1, so it's very punchy, but I think for that you need a slight bore out and that's when it gets full-on |

Well that sucks.
There is two M3's on ebay for wrecking, may be able to get a engine from one or even use the engine to get built so you dont need to send yours off?
